Compact FPC connector range

Available from TE Connectivity are 0.25mm pitch Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) connectors (slanti- ngly inserted FPC type).

Fine pitch FPC connectors facilitate more complicated circuit designs on smaller PCBs, helping towards the miniaturisation of consumer devices such as mobile phones and digital cameras.

Marine connectors for underwater environments

Developed for extremely harsh underwater environments, ITT Interconnect Solutions’ robust Marine Bronze connectors meet IP67 specifications when mated. These are manufactured from an aluminium-bronze alloy of iron, nickel, manganese and lead, making them extremely corrosion resistant. There are three types available – CIR Marine Bronze Bayonet, VE-VS Marine Bronze Threaded which conforms to MIL-DTL- 5015, and the VGE series (VG96929). Customised CIR Marine Bronze connectors are available for one-off applications. Operating over a functional temperature range of -55˚C to +125˚C, the CIR Marine Bronze devices are offered in the same range of sizes and contact arrangements as standard CIR connectors and offer the same electrical characteristics. They are available with one to 159 poles and with cable sections ranging from 0.15 to 107mm².

CIR Marine Bronze Bayonet lock CIR interconnects are produced in accordance with NATO standard VG95234 and offer fast coupling/uncoupling with a ‘snap-in’ lock. Resistant to shock and vibration, the connectors are waterproof to 10m for up to 12 hours for classes with specified grommets and gaskets. The VGE series high current connectors conform to the VG 96929 classification for the transmission of high power at a low voltage level. They have the same coupling features, mechanical data and panel mounting dimensions as ITT ICS standard CIR connectors. Applications include military field equipment, ships and other sea-going vessels.

The robust connectors have a box-shaped, back-flip lock actuator and a lower contact point. They are also designed to accept a printed circuit at an angle, enabling more flexibility in PCB design.

Masaki Mukasa, product man- ager at TE, said: “Since the printed circuit can be inserted at an angle, the connector can be placed anywhere on a printed circuit board. It is also now possible to place other components in front of the FPC connector.” TE Connectivity www.te.com

Right angle one-piece interfaces withstand vibration Designed for high shock/

vibration applications, Samtec’s SIR1 right angle one-piece inter- face is a high performance board- to-board interconnect solution. This is designed for power or signal applications with a current carrying capacity range from 1.4A to 2.8A per contact at 30˚C temperature rise, dependent

upon total number of contacts powered. It has a 6mm profile and is available in single row with three, five, 10 and 15 posi- tions. The 2,54mm pitch contact system provides large contact deflection for a flexible and reliable connection. Samtec www.samtec.com

New from Amphenol Industrial is the compact and lightweight Amphe-PPC, a high amperage, single pole, plastic circular connector. Suitable for outdoor power supply, control systems and communications environments, the connector uses silver-plated 5.7mm RADSOK crimp-termination contacts (a gold-plated version is also available) and can carry a current up to 120A. Featuring a lower insertion force and temperature rise than traditional contacts, this comes with integrated waterproof cable glands and rubber seals, as well as a moulded thermoplastic housing and insert. It is designed with 90- and 120-colour and keyway positions of different polarity and is finger-proof in unmated applications to prevent risk of shock. The connector can withstand up to 500 mating cycles at extended

temperatures from -40°C to +125°C, salt fog spray to NACI 5% for 1000 hours, and shock and vibration of 980m/s. Maximum operating voltage is 2000 VAC; contact resistance is five million-ohms; and minimum insulation resistance is 5000 mega-ohms at 25°C. The connector uses the company’s patented RADSOK technology, utilising the tensile strength properties of flat, high conductivity alloy grid for the high normal forces required for conductivity, while providing a large conductive surface

area. This results in a correspondingly low voltage drop and low temperature rise while maintaining low insertion forces. Amphenol Industrial Operations Europe www.amphenol-industrial.com

The compact Brad Micro-Change M12 Circular Hybrid Technology (CHT) connector from Molex com- bines Cat 5e data speed and power supply for high signal integrity and excellent performance. Available from Rutronik, this comprises two shielded twisted pairs cat 5e data lines and either two or four contacts capable of carrying up to 10A per contact. It is overmoulded to ensure IP67 rated sealing and provide dependable strain relief. The fully-shielded four-pin array for the Cat5e lines with wrap around metal tube (patent pend- ing) allows for optimum signal integrity and performance – the two overlapping tubes channel the signal through the connector with- out affecting crosstalk and EMI. The Micro-Change CHT 4+2 and 4+4 configuration is currently available in the M12 threaded form factor. For the future, it is planned to extend the design into Ultra-Lock, M16 and M23 connector formats. Rutronik www.rutronik.com
