Jean-Louis Evans, managing director of TÜV SÜD Product Service, said: “The ‘explosion directive’ has far reaching conse- quences for machinery manufac- turers. Explosive atmospheres include apparently benign indus- tries such as waste recycling and food processing, not just the more obvious ones such as oil & gas or chemicals. The legal repercus- sions are significant if they get this wrong and a service such as
ours provides a simple route to ensure that they get it right.” Manufacturers that use TÜV
SÜD’s new ATEX Safety Service will reduce time to market for new products and ensure that existing ones can continue to be sold legally. The TÜV SÜD ATEX Safety Service includes: • Quality audits – of facilities owned by component and machinery manufacturers.
• Site safety engineering reviews – for end-product manufacturers who operate potentially explo- sive processing plants.
• Regulatory advice – to help both machinery and end-product manufacturers ensure that they comply with various country- specific regulations.

a very special magazine this month – covering the past, present and future. Technology has moved on in leaps and bounds since 1971. We have therefore produced a magazine in two parts. The main issue looks at today’s technology, while the supplement looks back over the last 40 years, covering such aspects as the technology, the products, the applications, the changes that have taken place, and information on how companies have adapted over the years. Many companies also give us a glimpse into the future and where technology and industry may be going. This has been a very interesting issue of the magazine to work on, and I’d like to thank all the companies that provided information and managed to find old photos to illustrate the last 40 years of design! We hope you enjoy reading it. Rachael Morling – Editor
