Capaz: She knows the way
I am a principal at Swiftsure Yachts and current owner of Capaz. When deciding on a boat for my planned sabbatical and family cruise, as a yacht broker, I had many options. Ultimately I picked Capaz, purchasing her in 2008. The Bob Perry-designed, 48-foot pilot house ketch Capaz
made sense excelling in all the areas that I was looking for. She had all the gear nec- essary for offshore use. Ruggedly built, she sails well and with the long waterline really knocks off the miles. There is no wood to maintain on deck and very little be- low. She has abundant storage capacity both on deck in the aft lazarette and below deck. There is good berthing arrangement for a family, with the kids’ room aft and the parents berthed forward, separated by the main salon and two closable doors! The tankage numbers are great with 360 gallons of fuel and 250 gallons of water. The ketch rig sail plan and electric primary winches make sail handling easy. The systems are easy to get at and maintain as well. What I wasn’t necessarily looking for, and underestimated the value of, was the pilot house. Being able to see out while at anchor and the ability to stand watch below was huge, and ended up being one of the things I like most about the boat. Over 2009 and 2010, we took that cruise, sailing to the South Pacific and back. It was the trip of a life-
