2011 Rolex Big Boat Series / Farr 30 World Championship The Rolex Big Boat
Series hosted by the
St Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco, is the West Coast’s premier regatta. Attracting sailors from across the United States and the World, the Big Boat Series traditionally offers competitors heavy winds and strong currents. The 2011 Big Boat Series would not disappoint with world class competition in “dogs- of-chains” wind conditions. Among the 81 boats racing, 33 would
be racing under IRC handicap and 48 would be racing in One-Design fleets. The four IRC divisions would include boats such as the TP52, RP45, Farr 40 and a variety of very fast custom sleds. IRC C would hold the newly formed “Fast 40” division which included the J/125s, the Farr 36, the ID35 and newcomer, the Farr 400. The One-Design fleets included the J/120, Express 37 and the J/105 with the largest One-Design fleet of 21 boats. The highlighted One-Design fleet
would be the Farr 30s racing in their Worlds, with boats representing the US, Canada and Germany. Seattle Boat Nefarious, skippered by Daniel Randolph, was ready to race having just tuned up in the pre-worlds. Also representing the Pacific Northwest would be Darrin Burns’ Idiopathic and

Andrew Hamilton’s Through, both from Vancouver, BC. Raymond Hines crewing aboard Nefarious mentioned that the level of competition was extreme and the learning curve high. Each of the crew racing with Nefarious indicated that they were having the time of their lives and each wished that Seattle had its own Farr 30 class. San Francisco Bay is a unique locale
to hold a competitive multi-day regatta. The race venue, with the city of San Francisco to the south, beautiful Marin County to the north, Alcatraz Island right in the middle and the amazing Golden Gate Bridge to the west, offers a stunning panorama. The StFYC’s primary race officer and race committee performed a top-notch job in organizing the best courses for the conditions each day.
For the first three days of the regatta,
the PRO held two races each day for each division. Like clockwork, the morning fog would give-way to sunshine and the winds would slowly build. Race one would be unique for each division, starting from one of two areas in 10-15 knots of wind. Race two, with winds ranging from 20-25 knots, would take competitors around Alcatraz and along the city waterfront to the StFYC. By the third day the winds began in the 30’s

and remained honking until the end of the second race. Aboard Tim Fuller’s J/125 Resolute downwind runs with boat speeds in the mid to upper twenties was exhilarating. With exceptional crew work and expert boat handling we earned second in our division. The high winds on day three
also proved fortunate for Velos Kjeld Hestenave’s Tanton 73. Team Velos would include a handful of Pacific Northwest sailors including Tom Gilbert from Anacortes. Tom noted that Velos thrived in the heavy breeze and performed well against their competitors. Having to race against the TP52 in IRC A, Aaron Bronson mentioned that team Velos worked diligently to keep the boat moving and to reel-in their competition. On the fourth and last day of the
regatta was the “Bay Tour;” a single race that travels to multiple marks across the Bay and includes a multitude of runs, reaches and upwind legs. During the last race of the regatta, the fleet was spread across the Bay under the sun with winds in the high teens. As we all converged on the StFYC finish line for our last horn, day four was a fitting end to a truly fantastic regatta.
