‘Video games media should be as mainstream as sport and film’


IGN’s global president says no-one has created a “great media service for mobile and social” by Christopher Dring


VIDEO GAMES media is not living up to its “extraordinary potential”, says IGN. The online giant’s ambitious president Roy Bahat says gaming media ought to be as big as movies and sport, and that it’s down to IGNto make it happen. “We have this vision of a new kind of media company that makes games media a mainstream form of entertainment in the same way as sport and film,” Bahat toldMCV.


“Despite the enormous number of people playing games, it has still to reach that degree of success. “We have a long way to go in becoming mass market, so we need to redefine this category. That means getting celebrities involved and making it clear how many of

“We have Andy Murray. So obviously we speak to Murray’s agent, we try to understand what he is willing to do and at what cost is he willing to do it, and then try to come up with a creative idea that helps us promote the game with him in it.


Added Gartner: “It could be a video, an application, a website or a launch event. Maybe we’ll bring [Murray’s] face to the forefront of the game. What is he willing to do with us? Those are the creative things we are brainstorming right now.” The original Grand Slam
