Kolkata Strategically located in north east India, and home to many large Indian corporations, banking and financial institutions, the capital of West Bengal is turning its attention to trade with China and the South East Asia countries. Air India departs Heathrow daily for Kolkata,
flying via Delhi. Lufthansa operates three flights a week from Frankfurt, Emirates flies 12 times a week from Dubai, and Qatar Airways flies daily out of Doha.
Hyderabad At a lofty elevation of 500 metres above sea level and with relatively cool temperatures, Hyderabad has some of India’s most expensive real estate. Home to Tollywood, the country’s second-largest film industry, it is also a prominent IT hub. BA serves Hyderabad five times a week from Heathrow, and Lufthansa flies thrice-weekly ex-Frankfurt. Emirates flies from Dubai three times daily, with Qatar Airways and Etihad offering a daily frequency from Doha and Abu Dhabi respectively, while Oman Air has two services a week from Muscat.
China Beijing Still basking in the kudos of hosting the Olympic Games in 2008, the capital of the Chinese Republic continues to win gold as the spearhead of the world’s fastest-growing economy, a key centre for electronics, IT, communications and pharmaceutical industries. British Airways and Air China both fly daily
from London Heathrow to the Chinese capital. The same frequency is offered by Finnair from Helsinki, Lufthansa out of Frankfurt and Munich, and KLM and China Southern from Schiphol. Air France operates 14 times a week from Paris CDG. Frequent services from the Gulf are with Etihad, Qatar Airways and Emirates.
Shanghai The largest city in the People’s Republic, Shanghai has grown over the past two decades to exert a global influence in finance, commerce, fashion, technology and culture. From Heathrow, Virgin flies to Shanghai daily –
Air China code-sharing on the route – with British Airways flying six times a week, and China Eastern four times a week. Air France operates 14 services weekly from Paris CDG, KLM flies daily
from Schiphol, and Finnair and Lufthansa depart daily from Helsinki and Munich respectively, with the German carrier also flying twice-daily out of Frankfurt. Emirates flies twice daily out of Dubai, Qatar Airways serves Shanghai daily from Doha, and Etihad will introduce the route next March.
Guangzhou Located on the Pearl River Delta, the capital of Guangdong province is one of mainland China’s leading commercial and manufacturing regions. The main industries here include automobile assembly, biotechnology, logistics and computer software. With no direct services from the UK to Guangzhou, European flights are with Air France from Paris CDG, flying five times a week, or China Southern’s daily departure out of Schiphol. Lufthansa has three operations a week from Frankfurt, and Emirates and Qatar Airways fly daily from Dubai and Doha respectively.
Shenzen Shenzen hosts some of China’s most successful high-tech companies, banks, insurance firms and financial institutions. With no direct services from the UK or continental Europe to Shenzen, travel options are limited to flights via a major Chinese gateway.
Chongqing Thanks to its remoteness in south west China, Chongqing is ideal for military bases involved in weapons research and development. The
downside is that the export sector is small due to the city’s inland location, which means focusing on the local consumer market. There are no flights from the UK or Europe to Chongqing, although Finnair is to launch a direct route from Helsinki next May. The alternative is to fly to Hong Kong and onward with Cathay Pacific or Dragonair.
