Solutions for today’s office professional


EUROPCAR has revealed plans to introduce the electric Opel Ampera to its car hire options this autumn. The first of the electric-operated Opel vehicles – which will be known as the Vauxhall Ampera in the UK – will be deployed at Europcar outlets in Germany this November, followed soon afterwards by Belgium and the Netherlands, and then the UK, France, Italy, Spain and Portugal next year. Says Rafael Girona, chief operating officer of Europcar: “We are committed to


responsible and sustainable business practices. We see customers’ growing appetite


for low CO2, environmentally- friendly solutions, especially in urban areas, and strongly believe that electric vehicles will help enhance access to the greenest mobility solutions.” The Ampera can run for up to


50 miles on pure electricity with zero tailpipe emissions, and a further 310 miles on a 111kw electric battery with less than 40g/km carbon emissions and a charge time of four hours.


ADVANCES in the use of biofuels have gained pace in recent months with both Lufthansa and Finnair operating scheduled flights powered partially by environmentally friendly alternatives to kerosene. Lufthansa has launched a six-month biofuel trial with an Airbus A321 on scheduled flights between Hamburg and Frankfurt. One of the aircraft’s engines operates on a 50/50 mix of regular fuel and biosynthetic kerosene (derived from pure biomass consisting of jatropha, camelina and animal fats), with the test period alone estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 1,500 tonnes. operations. We are thus continuing to steadily imple- ment our proven and successful strategy for sustainability.” Finnair, meanwhile, has also


taken to the skies with altern- ative fuels onboard, operating its first biofuel flight between Amsterdam and Helsinki in July – the longest such commercial biofuel flight flown to date. “We want to be a pioneer in sustainable development in air transport,” says Kati Ihamaki, vice president of sustainable development at Finnair. “Engine emissions account


for the biggest environmental impact of flying, so investing in research into alternative fuels is a natural way to reduce the load on the environment.” The fuel used by Finnair was made from recycled vegetable oil and was a 50/50 blend with ordinary fuel.
