MUST-SEE SIGHTS Québec City, as visitors will hear numerous times, is the only walled city in the Americas north of Mexico. Its impressive fortifications are worth exploring and a wander round the quaint Old Town and Petit Champlain is a must.

Doing business This is French Canada at its most impassioned so efforts to communicate in French – if only a greeting – will be expected, though nearly everyone is bilingual. If your employees demonstrate anything more than a smattering of French then their stock might well rise.
Cool hotel The majority of Québec City’s business hotels – the Hilton, Delta and the Chateau Laurier among them – sit outside this historic city’s famous fortifications, close to the convention centre. But if your travellers prefer something a little more authentic then there are two excellent options within the Old Town. They are the famous Fairmont Chateau Frontenac (www.
fairmont.com/frontenac), which dominates the skyline, and the significantly smaller but no less charming Auberge Sainte-Antoine (
www.saint-antoine.com), a very smart Relais & Chateaux hotel.
Hip restaurant The aforementioned Auberge Sainte-Antoine hotel is home to the multi-award-wining Panache restaurant. Located in a 19th century maritime warehouse, the cosy restaurant has low ceilings, stone walls and large timbers – and, in winter, an open fire – and serves traditional French Canadian cuisine ‘with a
twist’. A lunch menu starts from $14 (£9) and an evening à la carte menu features mains priced from $34 (£21). The restaurant is open daily until 10pm.
Happening bar Maurice, on the city’s Grande-Allee thoroughfare, is a three-floored bar, nightclub and restaurant (The Voodoo Grill) set in a converted mansion. It’s popular with a trendy crowd and gets very busy at weekends.
Getting there Air Canada flies twice daily from London Heathrow to Montréal with numerous onward connections to Québec City. A more leisurely option of travelling between Canada’s two largest French-speaking cities is a three-hour trip on the popular VIArail train route.
Getting downtown Taxis from Québec City Jean Lesage Airport to the city centre charge a flat fee of $32.50 (£21) and take around 20 minutes. A bus service costs $2.75 (£1.80).
The details Québec City is four or five hours behind the UK depending on the season. The currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD): £1 = $1.59. British passport holders do not require a visa to enter Canada.
