BUSINESS travel is booming in NewcastleGatehead, with several national and international hotel brands recently choosing the area to broaden their property porfolios, ranging from four-star to budget. There are currently five new hotels due to open between September and early 2012, as Jessica Roberts, head of business tourism at NewcastleGateshead Convention Bureau, explains: “It demonstrates real confidence in the destination. The choice on offer – four-star hotels like a proposed Crowne Plaza, to budget accommodation including the soon-to-open Sleeperz (pictured) and recently-launched Euro Hostel – means the destination is well equipped to cater for conference and meetings delegates with varying needs and budgets.” Hotels under construction include

THE ROOM REPORT IN BRIEF


• CHOICE Hotels has announced the addition of the newly-branded Clarion Collection Birmingham hotel. The centrally located four-star property will initially offer 60 rooms, increasing to 73 after the addition of 13 suites later this year.


• THE Kempinski Hotel Badamdar in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku, is due to open for business this month. Close to the city's Heydar Aliyev airport, the 14-storey, 283-room hotel will have a conference centre, 14 meeting rooms and 36 boardroom-style offices.

• THE Majestic Hotel in Harrogate has been refurbished after a fire damaged the building last year. The makeover has included a refresh of bedrooms and meeting rooms, including new LCD TVs. The hotel has also launched a series of new team building packages.


• GUERNSEY property, the Old Government House Hotel & Spa has been awarded the island's first five- star status. The Red Carnation Hotel Collection property is in St. Peter Port.
