The Review ➔ Airline duo splashes the cash

THE newly merged United Continental company is investing over $500million in onboard improvements across its fleet, including more flatbed and Economy Plus seating. Flatbeds will be added to a further

62 of the carrier’s long-haul aircraft, taking the total to 185, and its Economy Plus seating will be introduced on over 300 aircraft, while wifi internet facilities will be installed on more than 200 aircraft. “We are making very good progress building the world’s leading airline,” says Jeff Smisek, president and chief executive officer of United Continental Holdings. “These product enhance- ments, coupled with our unbeatable route network and loyalty pro- gramme, will provide an unsur- passed travel experience for our customers. We are planning many other product enhancements, both on the ground and in the air, which we will announce in the future.”

IN THE AIR IN BRIEF

• AMERICAN Airlines has signed a contract for 260 new A320 aircraft. “The A320 family of aircraft will help us achieve improved fuel efficiency and other operational savings, while offering out customers state-of-the- art technology and an enhanced travel experience,” said AA president Tom Horton.

The developments are in addition

to the arrival of 25 new aircraft due for delivery in the next year, which includes the long-awaited B787 Dreamliner. United will become the first North American airline to take delivery of the Dreamliner for which it and Continental have each placed an order for 25 of the Boeing aircraft. They will be configured with 36 flatbed seats in Business- First, 63 seats in EconomyPlus and

120 seats in economy. Details of which routes it will operate have not yet been revealed. “The 787 will be a game changer

for the new United and the industry. It will be a customer pleasing aircraft, and with its range, fuel efficiency and superb operating economics, will allow us to enter new long-haul markets and also replace older, less-efficient widebody aircraft,” says Smisek.
