Translating the Science of Infection Prevention into Sustainable Solutions for Reducing Surgical Site Infections

A model for infection preventionists to enhance translation of infection prevention science into sustainable solutions for reducing surgical site infections (SSIs) is presented. The model focuses on the premise that both flatline and frontline surveillance lead to risk assessment and performance improvement. Tools for frontline-flatline surveillance, risk assessment, project management, interdisciplinary communication, cuing performance, positive deviance, and education to improve practice compliance before processes are out of control are all addressed.
