The Standard Infection Ratio: What, Why, and When The standardized infection ratio (SIR) is a summary measure used to measure and track HAI incidence at a national, state, or local facility level over time. The method of calculating an SIR is identical to that used to calculate the Standardized Mortality Ratio (SMR); however, it uses HAI incidence rates instead of mortality. The SIR, the methodology used to calculate it, and why the SIR is being used by federal and state agencies instead of rates to track HAIs is described. An interpretation of the SIR and how it can be used is also dis- cussed, including how to obtain SIRs from NHSN.

Presenters: Jonathan R. Edwards, MStat, and Maggie Dudeck, MPH, CPH

The Standard Infection Ratio: A Deeper Understanding The standardized infection ratio (SIR) is a summary measure used to measure and track HAI incidence at a national, state, or local facility level over time. In November, 2010, this summary measure became available for all healthcare facilities reporting central line-associated bloodstream infection and surgical site infection data to the CDC’s National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN). This presentation builds on introductory webinar, “The Standardized Infection Ratio: What, Why and When,” and expands on the use of the SIR by healthcare facilities, as well as federal and state agencies.
