A Comprehensive, System-wide Program to Improve Hand Hygiene Compliance within a Healthcare System
Following a 2004 MRSA outbreak in a Neonatal ICU that resulted in one infant death and other prolonged hospital stays, Novant Hospital CEO Paul Wiles truly “led” his health system’s hand hygiene initiative: Novant launched a program that required a culture change and created an environment where every person priori- tizes proper hand hygiene, and mourns the human consequences of failure. A 3-year goal was set at 90% compliance. Implementation and monitoring of this initiative, as well as how all departments were incor- porated into the plan, are discussed. The outstanding results and continued success (the 90% compliance 3-year goal was met and increased to 95% compliance, which is also being met on a monthly basis). Changes in staff culture are also addressed.
Presenters: Sandy Cox, RN, CIC; Paul Wiles, CEO; and Thomas Zweng, MD, VPMA
