J.O’Shea & Sons shows total commitment to WRAP aggregates programme with help from Sandvik Mining and Construction


It is a little known fact that over two hundred and seventy five million tons of aggregates are used in the UK each year, with just sixty five million tons being derived from recycled sources. The remaining two hundred and ten million tons are drawn from primary virgin sources, with the resulting production having a direct and permanent impact on the environment. Furthermore, as the process of usage is completed traditional methods of disposal of demolition waste in landfill creates their own set of environmental problems. However, one Manchester company, J.O’Shea & Sons Ltd, have made a positive commitment to deal with this problem through embracing recycling targets set as part of the WRAP aggregates programme. They have recently underlined this commitment by investing in mobile crushing and screening equipment from Sandvik Mining and Construction Ltd. J.O’Shea & Sons was initially formed in 1959 providing bulk excavation, transport, demolition, remediation and enabling works for the construction industry. As the business has expanded so have the roles they fill, but whether acting as principal contractors offering an end-to-end service package, being sub- contractors or suppliers, clients large and small have been universally impressed with J.O’Shea & Sons professionalism, experience and dedication at every stage of the process. Additionally, and reinforcing their environmental credentials, they have added aggregate recycling facilities which has enabled them to supply high quality recycled materials for the construction industry. Their expertise in all stages of excavation and site preparation has made sure that J.O’Shea & Sons have been kept busy undertaking major construction and civil engineering projects both for public and private clients. contractors of the issues surrounding aggregates together with any negative environmental impact. The idea behind the programme is simple; instead of continually exhausting the worlds finite resources it is much better to recycle building waste for reuse as aggregate wherever possible – hence the significant and sustained investment in waste recycling facilities by J.O’Shea & Sons.


Through their commitment to the WRAP aggregates programme J.O’Shea & Sons has actively encouraged their clients to make use of their recycled aggregates in projects. This has been made possible, and reinforced, with the recent move to the purpose designed waste management facility in central Manchester. In order to supply recycled materials in sufficient quantities, and of a high enough quality, has necessitated in investment in modern, state of the art crushing and screening plant. Amongst the latest mobile screening and crushing plant J.O’Shea & Sons have acquired include a QJ340 tracked jaw crusher, and a QE340 tracked scalper from Sandvik Mining and Construction.

Sandvik’s unrivalled design and manufacturing expertise to build upon the success of the world’s best-selling track-mounted mobile jaw crusher, the QJ340’s predecessor, the C-12+. Compact and mobile, the QJ340 is powered by a C-9 engine that meets all known emissions standards, and boasts a large feed opening with unique high crushing speed that delivers high outputs together with excellent product size reduction for maximum productivity. Durability and reliability are ensured by a reverse crushing action capability to relieve blockages, and by an automatic lubrication system.

J.O’Shea & Sons as their mobile crushing solution dealing with diverse materials such as bricks, concrete blocks, rebar concrete and asphalt. On the job versatility is assured by a comprehensive range of optional extras that allow the QJ340 to be modified to match precisely the demands of any specific application. J.O’Shea & Sons have been so impressed with their QJ340 that they added a QE340 scalper / screener. The Sandvik QE340 is a heavy duty open flow screening and stockpiling system based on a sturdy, crusher-type chassis and features a hydraulically operated heavy duty hopper with double plated apron feeder.


The minimization of environmental damage is paramount to J.O’Shea & Sons operation, but at the same time so is the ability to produce quality aggregates at the required rates of production. This has meant not only throughput of material, but also maximising machine up-time. Trouble free and safe operation of both the Sandvik machines is


ensured due to an inherent low maintenance requirement and ease of fault location. A recent project that has allowed J.O’Shea & Sons to put their new equipment from Sandvik to good use has been the development of the New Chetham School of Music buliding in Manchester. The land utilised on this project previously consisted of industrial buildings built from 1880 –1970, and then used as car parks from the 1970s to 2009. J.O’Shea & Sons were employed as sub-contractors to site strip, then excavate all the sub-structures and basements that remained above ground. Furthermore, they were responsible for the extraction, transportation and disposal of any hazardous waste.


All health, safety and environmental issues pertinent to the site were given careful consideration, including the stability of a nearby main road during bulk excavation works. Upon site clearance, they were responsible for the placing of a piling mat in accordance with the Federation of Piling Specialists requirements. The Sandvik equipment played its role in ensuring that all material suitable for reuse was removed from site (due to the small foot print and working area), and then processed at the recycling centre, graded and then delivered to site when required. This meant that a great deal of the material used at the development originated from there.
