for their sculpting session,” explains Caroline. This treatment is often referred to as ‘Double Dipping’, and requires at least two alternate shades of spray tan solution.

Oonagh states: “The easiest way to do the treatment is firstly to do an all over spray tan using a lighter shade (like Bronz’Express PP1 or PP2) using a spray gun. Then the next day ask your client to return to the salon and using an airbrush system apply a darker shade (like Bronz’Express PP3) to the areas that you want to define, for example if you want to make the legs slimmer apply darker shade to the inside of the legs. Stencils can be bought for the abdominal area if the technician needs them. Airbrushing gives finer detail so is better for defi ning the areas.”

“Using a gentle sweeping motion across the body, working from the edge of the body inwards, it is possible to create a real trimming effect, particularly on the abdominal area,” says James Harknett, spray tan man to the stars at BOBSOHO. “Also, by focusing on the inner thighs and buttocks it is possible to really slim down the look of these areas. Contouring gives a beautiful finish and clients are always so thrilled with results.”

“Applying extra colour in these areas gives a slimming effect by drawing the eye inwards,” explain St Tropez, who’s 3D tan can be achieved during their tan treatment by concentrating on certain areas during the second spray application.

“For a cleavage imagine that your gun is a bronzing brush and lightly sweep product in a curved motion, from the shoulder blades down between the breasts to create the illusion of a deeper more voluminous curve,” explains Alyson Hogg, founder and CEO of Vita Liberata.

“Highlight the top of each breast with an illuminator and hey presto, AA to DD in an instant! For particularly neat cup sizes sweep extra colour under the breast to create an even fuller effect.”

With this type of contour tanning you must be realistic with clients, and know who it it’s not going to work for. For example it will be impossible to try and define a client’s stomach that does not have some muscle definition there to begin with. Painting a six pack onto a beer belly really won’t work!

“Contoured spray tans are not for the modest unassuming type as you will be drawing attention to what appears to be a toned and sculpted body,” says Annette. “It’s great for people who want to hide un-toned areas or define areas such as cheek bones, toned upper arms or six packs.”

Enhance the cleavage by applying tan from the shoulder blades down between the breasts.
