Tanning - Spray Tan Contouring .............................................................................................................................................................................. 3D THE REVOLUTION

However today’s high-tech spray tanning technology means that you can offer your clients much more than just a flat tan but enables you to contour the body to achieve all manner of looks, known by the experts under a number of guises including Advanced Tanning, 3D tan (using two shades of solution) or 4D (using three shades).

Contouring involves using spray tanning to shade different parts of the body to enhance muscle definition, and create a slimmer, leaner and more toned appearance. Depending on the parts of the body the client wants to enhance, different shading techniques are used to either hollow out certain areas with a darker tan, or make things stand out using a lighter shade.

“The 3D Tan offers so much more than tans of yesteryear, by offering a deeper, 3D effect that allows depth and definition to be injected into the skin,” explain St Tropez. “This look pops the skin by applying a selective second application during the spray tan treatment, creating contours and flattening limbs.”

“Contouring and airbrushing used to be the well kept secret of ‘A’ list celebrities to ensure they always looked toned, tanned and tantalizing in photo shoots, on screen or on the catwalk,” says Annette Close of He-Shi.

Oonagh Clarke of Bronz’Express agrees:“This treatment is very big in Hollywood at the moment with celebrities requesting the treatment. It also has been around in the body building world to highlight definition and tone on the muscles.”

“Body Contouring is very popular and extremely easy to do,” says Andréa Ní Éalaithe, Marketing and PR Executive for SunFX distributor Star Products International. “It is really effective and offering this with your spray tans will increase your client base!”

“With simple and clever shading and highlighting techniques you can slim a waist, reduce the appearance of thighs, increase the bust and even highlight abdominal muscles,” explains Caroline Carrick of Asu Nail & Beauty Supplies, who offer the Sun Laboratories Spray Tan System.

For men you will be defi ning their body to achieve a more masculine look, so concentrate on the abdominals to create a defined six-pack.

On men with little muscle definition, simply shade the areas of the legs, arms, chest and torso to create a toned look. The biceps and shoulder area can also be enhanced using the correct shading techniques, plus you can also create a sculptured jawline.

On women you can make unliked areas ‘disappear’ through optical illusions. The aim with spray tan contouring here is to create a longer and leaner appearance, and you can make clients look like they’ve dropped a dress instantly. Key areas to work on include ‘Bingo Wings’, arms and legs, the face, stomach and cleavage.

The 3D treatment

Creating the 3D effect usually takes place over two treatment sessions: the first to create the base colour, and the second, usually the following day, to spray over the fi rst layer of tan to highlight specifi c areas, such as abdominal muscles, cleavage etc. “Once your client has had their initial tan done they would then return to your salon
