iomart Group floated on the London Stock Exchange in March 2000 just before the NASDAQ crashed but weathered the dot com bust. Leveraging a rock solid business strategy based on acquisitions and organic growth the firm is now established as a major player in the managed hosting and cloud computing space.

omart, the brainchild of CEO Angus MacSween, was established in 1998 as a fully licensed telecommunications company providing ISP services. MacSween spent the previous decade buying and selling businesses in the telecoms sector. Aptly, the name iomart is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic word for ‘enterprise’ and it neatly encapsulates MacSween’s enterprising approach to the telecoms and technology space, moving with the
market to position iomart as one of the UK’s leading providers of managed hosting and cloud computing to the SME and enterprise markets. MacSween commented: “With more and more businesses looking to the cloud for their data solutions we believe we have positioned ourselves well to take advantage of this market. We are in a market that is growing and here to stay, and we fully expect to participate strongly in that growth.”

IOMART Group has been named as one of the top 25 MSPs in the world in the annual Talkin’ Cloud 50 report. iomart employs around 195 staff with circa 50 per cent of them based at the firm’s Glasgow office. There is also a large sales office in London and additional technical teams based at each of the five data centres located around the UK. The company operates through its five key divisions – iomart Hosting, Easyspace (domain names and web hosting/design), Titan Internet (managed and unmanaged cloud solutions to SMEs and small corporates), RapidSwitch (dedicated servers and managed colocation) and the recently established Westcoastcloud (providing business mail, cloud storage and web security to the channel).

iomart’s target customers are organisations seeking an element of outsourcing and requiring guaranteed 24/7, 365 days a year Service Level Agreements. “Our focus is on offering mission critical hosting which is safe, secure and scalable,” added MacSween. “We believe the cloud is the growth area. With the early adopter phase now over and IT departments seeing us as a friend and not the enemy, iomart has already seen a big rise in enquiries for cloud services. Such enquiries now make up more than 25 per cent of all our leads.”

to MacSween. “Businesses want more flexibility with their IT,” he noted. “We are seeing big pushes for data storage and business email. In the education sector there is growing demand for our online child safety software Netintelligence that allows education authorities, parents and carers to filter and block inappropriate content on the web. We have recently developed Netintelligence for iPads and iPhones so we expect more interest in the product as a result.”
iomart recently launched a new division called Westcoastcloud which is
aimed specifically at the channel. Westcoastcloud brings together iomart’s cloud offering and expertise to the channel in one comprehensive portfolio. It gives resellers, distributors and existing channel partners such as BT, Stone Computing, XMA and Comet the chance to take business critical services like email, archiving, backup, storage and security to their customers with the full management service provided by iomart Group behind them.
