ALYSSA VIRANI BA (Hons) Dance Education

PAST: I began dancing at the age of 13, and since then have been training in a broad range of dance styles including ballet, jazz, contemporary, tap, and musical theatre. I have always had an interest in early childhood education and this has been reflected in my voluntary work in young children’s community programmes. It has been my love of working on the dance programmes specifically that has led to my aspiration to teach dance.

PRESENT: I have recently graduated from high school in Vancouver, Canada and decided to do the BA (Hons) Dance Education programme in order to attain a deeper understanding of dance in the education sector. Alongside my full-time studies, I continue to train in dance as well as teach various dance styles.

FUTURE: I look forward to eventually developing a programme integrating dance into early childhood education. I also hope to open my own dance school and pass on my knowledge and inspire many students.

JESSICA PEOPLES BA (Hons) Dance Education

PAST: I am originally from the United States and studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia before going on to dance professionally. After my professional career, I began teaching dance and moved to Ireland four years ago.

PRESENT: I now live in rural Ireland and teach at a dance academy where I have helped to develop the ballet programme. I have had the fortune of bringing my love of ballet and contemporary dance to a community which mainly focuses on other styles of dance. In addition to my dancing career I have recently had a baby. Being able to study a distance learning programme has allowed me to continue my studies at the same time as teaching and being a new mum.

FUTURE: I am already able to use the knowledge and understanding gained from my studies in practical ways. After completing the BA (Hons) Dance Education programme, I would like to pursue a Masters level qualification in dance through distance learning.

JANINE STREULI Master of Teaching (Dance)

PAST: I started dancing at an early age and have been teaching ballet ever since graduating from the BA (Hons) Art & Teaching of Ballet. After completing a PGCE course I took up a part- time teaching position in a Further Education College to teach on dance BTEC courses alongside my private sector work.

PRESENT: I currently teach ballet and A-Level dance on a part-time basis. When I first heard about the MTD programme, I was excited about the option of completing a Masters level qualification that was directly related to my teaching. Several of the MTD modules that I have completed involved practice based research which enabled me to instigate meaningful changes in my teaching. I am currently preparing some of my MTD research findings for publication.

FUTURE: Studying on the MTD has allowed me to progress my career and I have recently taken up a full-time lecturing position in higher education. I feel that the MTD course has helped me develop the knowledge, understanding and skills that I require for teaching and lecturing at university level.
