KEVIN COLLINGTON
COLLEGE: University of Florida
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE SPORT? A couple of friends on my swim team put together a triathlon relay for the 2003 Disney Triathlon.
ATHLETIC BACKGROUND: Swimmer since age 4
WHAT IS YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT IN TRIATHLON? Being on World Championship teams in 2007, 2009 and 2010.
WHICH DISCIPLINE IS YOUR FAVORITE? The run because that’s where races are won!
PRE-RACE SUPERSTITIONS: None — except that I like to eat pizza as my pre-race meal the nights before a race.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I take a lot of naps, read a lot of books, and do other low-key things like that. During big training blocks I take my rest time seriously.
HOBBIES: I like to travel with a camera when I go to races and always make sure to take a bunch of pictures. I also enjoy hiking and camping.
FAVORITE MOVIES: “The Shawshank Redemption,” “The Godfather” series, Bond movies, “Star Wars”

GWEN JORGENSEN
COLLEGE: University of Wisconsin
ATHLETIC BACKGROUND: I grew up swimming and running. I competed in college track, cross country and swimming.
WHY IS TRIATHLON APPEALING TO YOU? Triathlons promote a healthy/active lifestyle. Triathlons allow for diversification and something new every workout and race, which prevents injury and keeps thing interesting. I also meet people who are welcoming and nice; they have become my triathlon ‘family.’
WHICH DISCIPLINE IS YOUR FAVORITE? Transitions because they are totally different than the swimming, biking, running (and often overlooked).
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Read, cook, bake, work at Ernst & Young
HOBBIES: Volunteer at Boys and Girls Club
FAVORITE POST-RACE MEAL: Ice Cream
FAVORITE PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAMS: Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Brewers
IF YOU COULD BE A NATIONAL TEAM ATHLETE IN ANY OTHER SPORT, IT WOULD BE: Tennis or professional eater (I won a hot dog eating contest once)

BEN COLLINS
COLLEGE: Columbia University
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN THE SPORT OF TRIATHLON? I wanted to keep athletics in my life after college, and triathlon seemed like fun. I joined the Volcano Triathlon Team in Honolulu.
PROUDEST MOMENT IN TRIATHLON: My first pro win at the San Francisco Pan-American Cup.
WHY IS THE SPORT APPEALING TO YOU? It’s so new, there are no limits and nobody really knows what they’re doing. It’s all a big experiment, and it’s infinitely challenging.
PRE-RACE SUPERSTITIONS: Plenty, but they haunt me enough that I’d rather keep them to myself.
FAVORITE WORKOUT: Hills. Big, daunting, long, hard hills. Running them, riding them, killing myself to reach the summit, then doing it again.
HOBBIES: Surfing, wake boarding, sailing, and anything else on the water. Being on a boat is the only time I can really clear my mind.
FAVORITE QUOTE: “It’s good to have an end to journey toward, but it’s the journey that matters in the end,” Ursula K. LeGuin.

STEVE SEXTON
COLLEGE: UC Berkeley
HOW DID YOU BECOME INVOLVED IN TRIATHLON? Through the collegiate club at UC Berkeley, which I joined after being cut from the swim team. As I say, “Triathlon is a great refuge for washed up swimmers.”
PROUDEST MOMENT IN THE SPORT: Winning USAT Collegiate Nationals in 2008.
WHY IS TRIATHLON APPEALING TO YOU? It is the ultimate test of one’s physical and mental preparation. It cannot be faked.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? Environmental economics research so I can eventually finish my Ph.D.
FAVORITE POST-RACE MEAL: In-n-Out
FAVORITE OLYMPIC MOMENT: Janet Evans hands the Olympic torch to American boxing legend Muhammad Ali, who lit the Olympic cauldron at the opening ceremonies of the Atlanta Games. He received another Olympic gold medal to replace the one that he hurled into a river years earlier after being denied entrance at a whites-only restaurant.
