LOOKING TO LONDON
The best triathletes in the world will be in London next August in pursuit of one thing: Olympic glory. With one year to go, athletes are vying to meet qualification standards to earn a spot on the Olympic Team. Keep reading to learn all you need to know in advance of the London 2012 Olympic Games.


 


KEY RACES LEADING UP TO LONDON 2012
AUG. 6-7, 2011: LONDON ITU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES
• First qualifier for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team


SEPT. 10-11, 2011: BEIJING ITU WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES GRAND FINAL
• The world’s best square off on the 2008 Olympic course


SEPT. 24, 2011: USA TRIATHLON ELITE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP, Buffalo, N.Y.
• Top Americans aim for the title of national champion in race No. 4 of the USA Triathlon Elite Race Series


OCT. 23, 2011: PAN AMERICAN GAMES, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
• Olympic qualifying points and team spots are on the line for the best athletes in the Americas


TBD SPRING 2012
• The second qualifier for the U.S. Olympic Team will be held at a to-be-determined ITU World Championship Series event in the spring of 2012


 


OLYMPIC TRIATHLON TIMELINE
1904
An event in the Olympic Games consisting of the long jump, shot put and 100-yard dash was called “triathlon.”


SEPTEMBER 1974
While advertising its new race, the San Diego Track Club newsletter headline read, “Run, Cycle, Swim – Triathlon set for 25th,” using the word “triathlon” for the first time in the modern sense.


SEPTEMBER 4, 1994
At the 103rd IOC Session in Paris, triathlon was officially included on the Olympic Program starting with the Sydney Olympic Games of 2000. Triathlon was placed on the program on a provisional basis, meaning the sport would be re-evaluated after the Sydney Olympic Games to determine if it would remain on the program.


MAY 27-28, 2000
The first U.S. Olympic Triathlon Team Trials took place in Dallas, Texas, selecting the team that competed at the Sydney Olympics.
