Meet the Athletes
MANUEL HUERTA
COLLEGE: Florida Atlantic University
ATHLETIC BACKGROUND: I was a swimmer when I was a kid and started triathlon back in Cuba. Once I moved to America I swam and ran in high school and did tris during the summer.
HOBBIES: Spearfishing and surfing. I grew up on a Caribbean island, so I love staying close to the beach.
FAVORITE MOVIES: “Due Date,” “The Hangover,” “Wedding Crashers”
FAVORITE MAGAZINE: “USA Triathlon Magazine”
FAVORITE BOOKS: “The Old Man and the Sea”
FAVORITE MEAL TO COOK: Rice and beans
FAVORITE POST-RACE MEAL: Ice cream
FAVORITE PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAMS: Miami Heat, New York Yankees, Real Madrid
FAVORITE ALL-TIME OLYMPIC MOMENT: USA 4x100 meter freestyle swim in Beijing
FAVORITE QUOTE: “The darkest moments of our lives are not to be buried and forgotten; rather they are a memory to be called upon to remind us of the unrelenting human spirit and our capacity to overcome the intolerable.”

JENNA PARKER
COLLEGE: Harvard University
NOTABLE FAMILY FACTS: Brother Jarrod Shoemaker was a 2008 Olympian, mother has run the Boston Marathon 21 years in a row.
ATHLETIC BACKGROUND: I started swimming at the age of 7 and grew up around the sport of running. I also played soccer, field hockey and started taking dance classes at the age of 3.
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I love to surf and have also started taking acting classes. Also, spending time with my friends and family.
HOBBIES: I like to bake and I love to write music, even though I’m not that great at it.
MUSIC: Foster the People, Imogen Heap, Adele
FAVORITE MEAL: I love baking banana bread. Not really a “meal” but oh so good!
FAVORITE QUOTE: “C’est peu a peu que je peux.” — It is little by little that I can.
IF YOU COULD BE A NATIONAL TEAM-LEVEL ATHLETE IN ANY OTHER SPORT, IT WOULD BE: Figure skating. The grace and beauty combined with the power and pure athleticism has always been intriguing to me.

CHRIS FOSTER
COLLEGE: Penn State
NOTABLE FAMILY FACTS: Father once toured Europe as a flamenco guitarist.
PROUDEST MOMENT IN TRIATHLON: Outsprinting Chris McCormack in front of a hometown crowd at the 2007 Nautica Sprint Triathlon in Malibu.
PRE-RACE SUPERSTITIONS: I think they’re ridiculous. Though sometimes I like to get a haircut, so people don’t think I look like a vagrant.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN YOUR FREE TIME? I like to go out with friends, hang out with my wife, hike, listen to music — all the boring things pro triathletes have to do because we’re otherwise too tired. In the offseason, I go to concerts, surf, skimboard and play with all of the other sports toys that fill up my garage.
HOBBIES: From time to time, I write reviews for music blogs. I also ride my motorcycle 98 percent of the time to get around — I hate driving a car.
FAVORITE ALL-TIME OLYMPIC MOMENT IN ANY SPORT: Billy Mills winning gold in the 10k at the ‘64 Olympics. My high school coach always used to show us that old clip before meets.

ALICIA KAYE
COLLEGE: Laurentian University
