SOUTHEAST
By now, individuals within the USA Triathlon Southeast Region have been nominated by their peers, and the ballot for 2012 elections is set. For those of you who have chosen to accept the nomination for service to the region and to the sport of triathlon, thank you! Now it’s up to the USAT members to place their votes on who will lead our region for the next few years.

Annually, the election process invites members to run for open seats on either the National Board of Directors or seats on the regional council. With John Lines’ appointment to the National Board earlier this year, there are not any opportunities for individuals to vie for a seat on the national level. However, over half of the seats on the regional council are up for grabs. New for this year is that those elected will serve a four-year term, double the time from previous bylaws that allowed for governance of just a two-year term. According to the current Southeast Region chair Mike Lenhart, “Doubling the term for elected individuals best allows the regional leadership to plan for more than just a season or two. The region can make longer term plans given more consistency in its direction.”

Southeast Region USAT members can vote online between Aug. 1 and Oct. 1. USAT announces the results for all elections on Oct. 15. And once election results are certified on Dec. 1, the new council members will assume their roles effective Jan. 1, 2012. More details on the time lines for this year’s elections can be found on the USAT website, www.usatriathlon.org.

All members are encouraged to take the time to make their votes count. Historically, less than 10 percent of the members vote for the future leadership of the Southeast Region. At a time of great change and growth of the sport of triathlon, it’s imperative that we elect the right individuals to the council.“We need elected council members with a broad range of skills and backgrounds,” added Lenhart. “While age group membership levels continue to grow nationwide, in our region, we need help with similar strong growths in paratriathlon, youth programs, athlete development, and collegiate initiatives.” Make your voices heard and vote today.
