Hundreds of sailors aboard 75 boats

took to the waters of Elliott Bay on Saturday, June 11, for the 17th annual Leukemia Cup Regatta. In addition to their regular crews, the participating boats also hosted more than two dozen “Honorary Crew Members” – blood cancer patients, survivors and their families – for an afternoon of sailing. “This is our 10th time sailing in the

Leukemia Cup. We were thrilled to be able to host Cyrus Rhodes, a teenager currently undergoing treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and his mom on our boat on Saturday – knowing we could take them out for a relaxing day on the water, away from their worries, made the day that much more enjoyable and meaningful for us,” said Irv Alpert, this year’s top fundraiser. Another Honorary Crew Member, Jonelle Horn, has a reason to celebrate

this summer – it will be her 10-year anniversary of going into remission from Hodgkin’s lymphoma, after being diagnosed during her senior year of college. Today, Jonelle is doing great, thanks to research and treatments funded by The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). Jonelle was thrilled to be a part of the Leukemia Cup Regatta this year. “I love sailboats, the water and LLS…and hate cancer!” she said. Later that evening more than 350

sailors, crew, friends and passers-by gathered on shore at Elliott Bay Marina for the first-ever Leukemia Cup Luau. Tiki torches, Hawaiian shirts and Mai Tais set the stage for a fun-filled night that raised even more money for LLS. Hosted by KING 5 Meteorologist and Honorary Chair Jeff Renner, the evening’s auction featured weekend getaways, dining around Seattle, boat

services and plenty of other great deals. Between the participant fundraising, the luau and the auction, the generous boating community raised almost $130,000 to fund blood cancer research and patient services, with additional donations still coming in. Donations support the organization’s mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. “The support of the boating

community has been astounding,” said Anne Gillingham, executive director of the Washington/Alaska Chapter of LLS. “With the contributions made by the Leukemia Cup sailors, we are one step closer to a cure.” For more information, (206) 268-0777 or visit www.leukemiacup.org/wa
