New “Boating Simulator” Lets You Boat Anytime A new downloadable BoatUS

Boating Simulator, provided by the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water aims to use animation, simulation and video to keep boaters on the virtual “water” anytime - and teach them how to navigate through congested and sometimes treacherous waters. The Boating Simulator’s interactive

boating experience - complete with throttle, shifter and chartplotter - makes learning fun. “Research shows that most people use visual cues when learning and when you combine it with active participation, comprehension and retention increase,” said BoatUS Assistant Director of Boating Safety Ted Sensenbrenner. “Simply put, you learn while you’re having a great time driving the boat.” The Simulator, which utilizes

your keyboard, mouse and arrow keys to operate, is free to download at www.BoatUS.com/Foundation/games During the game’s voyage, players must use all of the tools at their disposal to navigate around aids to navigation as well as shallow water and other vessel traffic. Along the way you could be penalized for violating speed zones, approaching too close to another vessel or navigating out of bounds. All BoatUS Foundation games are

provided at no cost at www.BoatUS. com/Foundation/games

State Parks Reminds Boaters To Have Fun And Wear Life Jackets

Washington State Parks and

Recreation Commission’s Boating Program reminds boaters to be safe, know the law and always wear life jackets when boating. Each year, a majority of boating

deaths are a result of drowning, and a majority of these victims are not wearing life jackets. Reports have shown that many boating accidents are preventable, and by wearing a life jacket, boaters increase their chances of survival. State law requires all vessels carry

at least one U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket for each person on board. Additionally, vessels 16 feet or longer must have one U.S. Coast Guard- approved throwable personal flotation device aboard. Life jackets must be worn by those on personal watercraft and water skiers. Children ages 12 and younger must wear life jackets when aboard vessels less than 19 feet long. Life jacket loaner program: If boaters

do not have the required number of life jackets aboard their vessels, life jackets are available for loan at many boat launches, marinas and state parks across Washington. These life jackets are available for the day or weekend use at no cost. For information call (360) 902-8555 visit www.parks.wa.gov/boating

When the wind goes light, Just turn on UK SAILMAKERS Downwind Diesel

A UK Sailmakers Flasher can eliminate boring and painfully slow offwind cruising without resorting to “iron wind” and a cockpit filled with exhaust. The Flasher is an asymmetric poleless cruising spinnaker that’s simple to fly, painless to gybe, and easy to set and douse thanks to the dousing sock.
