Saildrive moved us easily with about average noise. Sails were unfurled and we moved nicely with the fractional rig.

The boat we were on had the jib

sheets on the cabin top. A performance package is available which includes upgraded standing and running rigging, as well as tracks and cars on the side decks. Yet another option is a self-tacking jib on a small traveler on the foredeck. As mentioned, the mainsheet,

traveler, and jib sheets are all run back to winches within easy reach of the helmsman. While this sometimes brings up a “what line to put on what winch,” situation, that will go away with familiarity. The hull sports a hard chine,

running from midships to the stern and the boat settled on it solidly as the wind came up. In fact, reaching back into Elliott Bay, we never had to touch the wheel, it balanced so well. The variety of sail setup options

for the Jeanneau 409, as well as interior choices, provides the racer/cruiser with enough cutomization to fulfill a variety of needs.

Thanks to Al and Kim Calcagno for

the sail on Kahuna, and to Jeff Carson of Marine Servicenter for getting us together.

Traveler, mainsheet and jib sheets are lead through a channel, through stoppers. Tails go into a special molded pocket next to helmsman. Transom folds down for walkthrough swimstep.
