graphite, mica, or talc. This problem can be avoided if you use an anti-seize product when you assemble the parts in the first place. One thing to watch for is that anti-seize stays on whatever
it gets on- threads, hands, clothes, etc Adjusting turnbuckles under pressure can be another element in galling. Both ends should be secured by cotter pins, rings or by jam nuts. Corrosion cracks or pitting are all reasons to replace turnbuckles. Any bent parts are also cause for replacement. One cause for this is when the movement of the turnbuckle is impeded. It is important that all turnbuckles or wire terminals which attach directly to chainplates are articulated in both the fore ‘n aft and athwart ships axis. (Figure 4) Turnbuckle covers are nice, but if this means you do not keep an eye on your turnbuckles, maybe using rigging tape over the cotter pins is a better idea. Shroud covers should not be tight on the wire because this will trap dirt and moisture thereby increasing the likelihood of corrosion. One solution for this is using a size which is loose fitting on the wire you are covering with a split nylon washer between the cover and the wire terminal. This gives the added advantage of it acting as a roller for head sails. On modern sailboats stays and shrouds are terminated in swaged

fittings or mechanical compression terminals. You should check swaged terminals for being bent or for cracks. (Figure 5) You can do this by using a magnifying glass or penetrant oil process. In both cases you will need to clean and polish the swages. The swages located at the lower end of stays and shrouds are more vulnerable to defects. Wire rope should exit
