A couple of jibes south of Blakely Rock set the fleet up to round the island to starboard, with only a few intrepid souls opting for the (usually) less preferred port rounding. By the time most of the fleet were
approaching Blake Island, puffs of over 20 knots were rolling down. The combination of clear blue skies, snow covered Olympics, Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier looming over the proceedings made for a true Northwest classic. The usual hole at the end of the
island, which in years past has had a profound impact on the fleet, was relatively benign this time as most boats rounded with some difficulty. The beat back up to West Point was
also classic, with the normal port tack lift as the wind bends around Magnolia bluff in full effect. A short tack at the beach to starboard and the weather mark loomed.

For most boats, the big drama of
the day came on the tight reach from the weather mark to the finish off the middle of Elliott Bay Marina. Don Wills stated that it was a “crazy and wild ride to the finish with lots of action trying to keep the boat upright and going in the right direction!” Several boats found the reach a bit much, putting on quite a show of round

ups and quick douses for the spectators on the cruise ships waiting to depart for Alaska. If there ever was a day to celebrate
sailing in the great Northwest, June 4th was it. Everyone who participated in Blake Island was a winner. Special thanks to Brian Ledbetter and his crew at SYC for hosting yet another fine Tri-Island Series.
