COMMS VISION 2011 PREVIEW
Convention sets agenda
John Chapman
Comms Vision Content Director John Chapman sets the agenda for this year’s industry leading convention (Gleneagles, 9-11 November) and at the forefront of debate will be the theme ‘Transformation taking shape’.
A
t last year’s Comms Vision, and for the first time, we had a theme running
through the event – Business Transformation. The content of the convention, supported by excellent presentations and debate, showed that this was a hot subject for both delegates and sponsors. After such a positive response we decided that for Comms Vision this year we will continue the overall theme and pick up on where we left off in 2010, looking at how this business transformation is actually taking shape and the impact it is having at all levels in the marketplace.
‘Transformation taking shape’ will be the theme of the convention and will focus on how the deployment of new ICT solutions across all market segments is helping organisations gain a competitive edge, a more nimble and active infrastructure and develop more efficient operations.
One of the first issues we will address is the customer experience and the changing expectations of users when they deploy these new ‘business transformation’ solutions, and in particular how critically they relate performance to business
outcomes. Organisations that are implementing Unified Communications and Collaboration solutions are realising that they have to get back to the basics of delivering a business critical solution. The channel is also aware that it is impossible to deliver the experience customers now expect across consumer grade infrastructure or utilising ‘best endeavours’ based service delivery. The experience customers expect and how that will affect what the channel delivers is critical to the future success of the Unified Communications and Collaboration market.
One of the other issues foremost in everyone’s mind is what are the catalysts driving organisations to deploy these business transformation solutions. In our second session this year we will explore how new collaboration applications are driving this ‘transformation’ world, and how they need to meet the twin demands of being highly functional and yet intuitive. Our speakers will also point out how these applications need to be integrated into the clients’ operations, processes and procedures if they are to have the transformational effect and deliver the desired business outcomes.

Picking up further on the transformational theme, probably the biggest debate at present among the
channel community is how to choose the right business model to deliver these new Unified Communications and Collaboration solutions: On premise, hosted or cloud? How to match the right service to meet customer expectations, budget restraints and match operational structure? We will compare the realities of offering on premise, hosted and cloud-based solutions as well as hybrids of all three.
Hot issues debated This discussion will then lead to our final debate, what it takes to become a Managed Service Provider, a business model that channel companies can no longer avoid if they want to compete in today’s rapidly evolving market. We will explore what being a Managed Service Provider entails, what we mean by ‘service’ in this context and the implications to the channel partner’s business. Our speakers will give their experience about what the
customer expects and the demands that places on the channel partner. They will also discuss how new types of partnerships are evolving to help the channel embrace this business model.
The next few years are critical for our industry as customer expectations expand dramatically and business models are rewritten. Comms Vision 2011 will try to address the issues that the channel faces and offer advice and guidance through its unique format.
Most importantly the convention offers directors of channel companies the chance to join in the debate, not only with suppliers but with their peers across the industry. Comms Vision 2011 will be the most important event for the channel over the next 12 months as it sets out the challenges and debates the opportunities. I look forward to meeting you there.
