IP Offi ce offers Nortel upgrade

Avaya resellers can now address the large SME base of BT Nortel users in the UK with a seamless migration to the just-launched IP Office 7.0.

Think Big launch event on 17th May was a clear statement that it wants to dominate the SMB sector. Avaya acquired system giant Nortel Enterprise Solutions in the summer of 2009 and now all legacy Nortel phones will function on the new version of IP Office, and all existing data on the old systems such as customer records, voicemail and system configurations can be migrated via a migration wizard.

At the launch, long-term IP Office reseller Paul Blundell of iQual told Comms Dealer: “This is very important to us because in the UK the biggest amount of systems out there are BT legacy

un concurrently with a webcasted global announcement in New York, Avaya’s

systems, Meridians, Norstars and BCM systems. I can now go into all those customers with a migration path. It’s the best case scenario because I have not got to buy new handsets which is a great selling benefit and will help me secure more service revenues.”

According to Jeremy Butt, Vice President of Worldwide Channels at Avaya, this is ‘terrific news’ for the customer and reseller. He said: “BT was a massive seller of Nortel products so there is a large installed Nortel base in the UK SME sector. Now, a customer looking to upgrade and increase collaborative working with conference and mobility capabilities can leave all existing handsets in place. There is no barrier for people to migrate heritage configurations.”

Avaya IP Office 7.0 will also deliver an expanded portfolio of devices for multimedia collaboration, including new colour touchscreen desktop phones. New conference room phones offer patented wide-band audio, call recording via SD card and fast USB connectivity to a laptop for temporary set-ups. These are part of a portfolio that offers a range of advanced communications, such as HD videoconferencing via desktop PC with no added equipment required.

Avaya also previewed forthcoming innovations in collaboration for this market, including the Avaya Flare Experience on mobile devices and tablets for Avaya IP Office. This functionality will integrate the distinctive ‘touch and swipe’ interface of Flare on third party devices, providing simplified mobile access to integrated directory, unified voicemail, instant messaging and more.

Avaya shared its vision for a hybrid cloud approach to small and medium communications, which places Avaya IP Office on premise, while enabling select applications to be hosted in the cloud on a partner network. This capability will allow more flexible use and faster deployments of Avaya’s latest collaboration applications.

Roberts was recognised for his outstanding contribution, commitment and dedication to the telecommunications industry. After he completed a City & Guilds certification in Radio and Television Servicing in 1976 at Bolton College, the college then arranged a job interview for Roberts at Pennine Telecom Group. From repairing radios he worked his way up, ultimately leading a management buy-out to acquire the company in 2008. He now

leads an £8m turnover business employing over 60 staff which has expanded from its roots in two-way radio to offer traditional and Internet telephony, wireless communications, data networks, mobiles and the fast-growing field of unified communications.

Roberts said: “I am immensely proud to have been selected to receive this commendation. It’s very rewarding to receive personal recognition but more importantly awards of this nature highlight the contribution that vocational skills and qualifications bring to the UK economy.

“Pennine Telecom has always recognised the value of these types of skills and training, as my own career demonstrates, and it continues today in our current recruitment policy, apprenticeships and company wide training programmes.”
