After 10 weeks of collaboration in Spring 2008 with VTech, a world leader in cordless telephones and electronic learning products, SCAD industrial design students Ishmael Adams, Jesse Bizzoco and Austin Brown received job or internship offers with the Hong Kong-based technology company. VTech again sponsored a product development project in Spring 2009. As a result, students Lauren Peters and John Adams were offered six-month internships with the company.
In winter quarter 2009, the SCAD industrial design department embarked on its first sponsored project with Kids II. Based on the overwhelming success of that initial collaboration, the department has continued to build a strong relationship with Kids II. Led by professor Jesus Rojas, associate chair of the department, two sponsored classes in 2010 focused on designing innovative baby gear and included a competition. Matthew Morgan’s shopping stroller earned third place, and Francis Fave’s dual-action swing garnered second. Awarded first place for her butterfly cushion, Jean Kee received an internship and the possibility of having her winning design prototyped. The success of the classes resulted in a sponsored trip for 12 participating students to Kids II headquarters in Hong Kong and involvement in future projects with the company. Kids II hired three of the students as interns and another for a full-time position at its Atlanta office. Nine of the company’s 12 designers are SCAD alumni.
M.F.A. industrial design student Amit Bapat earned international acclaim in 2010 for leading a team of SCAD design students in the creation of a consumer-friendly, affordable and aesthetically appealing bio-sand filter that could help combat E. coli water contamination in Uganda. Implementing industrial design, design management and service design principles and
methods, Bapat’s team produced a lightweight design solution that could be manufactured in small communities, creating economic opportunities, and then easily transported to even more remote areas.
Graduates of the SCAD industrial design program have secured employment with some of the world’s top design consultants and corporations, including Continuum, IDEO, Procter & Gamble, Target, Lowe’s, Husqvarna, BMW DesignworksUSA, Kids II, frog design, CP+B, Hasbro, Fischer Price, RKS, 3M, Google, Design Concepts Inc., Big Bang, Lazar, Four Winds and many others.
The SCAD industrial design program is housed in the Gulfstream Center for Design in Savannah, a 44,000-square-foot state- of-the-art facility featuring studios, labs and workshops. Students are trained through hands-on experience in an expansive model shop to work with wood, metal, plastics and composites, putting various techniques into practice by experimenting, simulating and prototyping.
The first-rate computer lab is equipped with the latest industry hardware and software, including 49 Cintiq interactive pen displays, Autodesk Studio, Adobe CS5 Master Collection, Rhino 3-D, SolidWorks and Autodesk Maya. Two laser cutters, two CNC milling machines, a 3-D laser scanner and seven rapid prototype machines, which print ABS and polycarbonate models from computer-generated designs, enable students to precisely convert design ideation into physical reality.
