In 2010, seven fibers students collaborated with acclaimed artist JuYeon Kim to create her stunning exhibition “The In-Between,” which was inspired by their interpretation of the eighth-century Buddhist text “The Tibetan Book of the Dead.” Kim describes “The In-Between” as her first true collaboration in which her SCAD student collaborators offered not only their technical skills but also their creative interpretations of the installations’ themes.

Students gain internships with companies and organizations such as Donghia, the Color Association, Zac Posen, Shaw Industries, Dell, Martha Stewart Living, Global Mamas (Ghana, Africa) and the Textile Museum. In addition, SCAD’s Working Class Studio program offers internships to provide instructional support and hands-on experience for undergraduate and graduate students interested in developing a professional studio practice. ShopSCAD offers students the opportunity to showcase, market and sell their work.

Cotton Inc. sponsors an annual scholarship competition with the SCAD fashion and fibers departments. The goal of the competition is to further awareness of cotton fiber and textiles among students and to challenge them to develop innovative applications for cotton. B.F.A. fibers student Margo Nelson won an $8,000 scholarship in the fibers category, and B.F.A. fibers student Tasha Toth and B.F.A. fashion student Erin Goodman received $10,000 for the collaborative entry.

In December 2010, fibers undergraduate students Ricki Dwyer and Holly Sexton conceived, designed and developed ornaments for the White House Blue Room Christmas tree, widely regarded as the famed residence’s official holiday tree. Fibers graduate student Michael-Birch Pierce created the embroidered tree skirt – measuring 18 feet in diameter and featuring the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” – that encircles the base of the tree. Students and faculty from the entire department worked together to complete the ornaments in less than a week.

SCAD offers the most balanced curriculum of fine art, studio production and design for industry of any fibers program, which prepares SCAD students for a wealth of career options. Fibers alumni work for such companies as Anthropologie, Target, Lilly Pulitzer, DuraLee Fabric, Penland School of Crafts, OshKosh and Mohawk Home. They also work as independent designers and artists, write for publications such as Design*Sponge, Art in America and Art Forum, and pursue residencies and graduate degrees.
