Selling Long Haul on safaris


Zambia walked away with an array of


awards at this year’s Selling Long Haul- sponsored Good Safari Awards held at Moyo in Durban. Chiawa Camp, on the Lower Zambezi, won Best Safari Property in Africa; Robin Pope Safaris landed the Best Contribution to Safari Tourism; Chongwe River House was Best Safari House in Africa and Grant Cumings of Chiawa Camp won Best Personal Contribution to Conservation. The judging panel also recognised the


work of African conservation project, Africat, in Namibia, by awarding the team Best Wildlife Organisation. The Namibia Tourism Board won Best Tourism Board in Africa. South Africa was represented in a


spread of sectors with Ant’s Nest Riding Safaris winning Best Riding Safari Operator in Africa, Karkloof Spa retaining the Best Safari Spa Property and South African Airways winning the gong for Best International Airline to Africa. www.safariawards.com/winners11


Eastern Cape asks 'Are you up for it?'

As the cruising sector goes from


Eastern Cape Tourism, which launched its ‘Are You Up For It? campaign focusing on soft adventure opportunities at last year's World Travel Market, has targeted the UK and Ireland as a core market for growing visitor numbers. Brighter PR in the UK has been


appointed to raise the region's profile among the trade. It is also known for its wildlife parks, deserted beaches and culture and heritage attractions. Brighter's MD, Ian Benjafield, said the


company is planning a series of road shows and fam trips, which would focus on adventure and trekking products. In a bid to protect the vulnerable rhino population in the Eastern Cape, the Amakhala Game Reserve, near Port Elizabeth, has set up the Chipembere Rhino Foundation (www.chipembere. org) to help raise awareness of rhino poaching. This follows the loss of the reserve’s two male rhinos to poachers. www.ectourism.co.za
