editorial Positive thinking
can be a rather depressing watch with very few ‘feel good stories’ while a large proportion of newspapers often seem to favour the doom and gloom angle. Maybe this is part of being British – we’ve never been particularly comfortable with blowing our own trumpet and if the news is positive and the weather is fine what would we have to moan about? This month the hell in a handcart
T
brigade seem to have outdone themselves. Most people knew very well that this year was going to be another tough one and it was likely to be a year of consolidation with most businesses aiming to stay afloat rather than looking to expand. While it’s important that we know the truth about the economy, a few good news stories wouldn’t go amiss occasionally – there are companies that are enjoying a particularly fruitful year or two and a respectable
he UK media have often been accused of being a rather negative bunch and sometimes it’s not hard to see why. News bulletins
number of these can be found in the network infrastructure industry. Those that have found success easy to come by have often been the early adopters of new technologies. The biggest increases in IT spend this year have undoubtedly come in cloud computing and virtualisation management; something predicted early last year. Those that put themselves in a position to take advantage of these booming areas are now quietly reaping the rewards and will no doubt continue to do so over the next few years. Data centres are popping up all over the country as confidence in the security of the cloud increases. Companies that do not want to waste time and capital in constructing their own data centre have realised that it is far simpler to pay for space in a privately owned facility and as a result the trend for data centre outsourcing is now accelerating rapidly. There are, of course, other areas witnessing encouraging growth, most noticeably in the IP sector where
networking solutions are required to support services such as video, voice and building management.
By simply believing everything you read or watch it would be easy to assume that every part of every industry is floundering at the moment. Look a bit closer and you will see that there are sectors and businesses managing to flourish under the tough conditions, they just don’t always seem to grab the headlines.
