on the case Council project
Northumberland County Council (NCC) has invested in a wireless mesh network platform from KBR to provide high speed connectivity and Wi-Fi at street level across the county. Before 2008, NCC relied largely on leased lines for its Internet connectivity and as it operates from hundreds of sites throughout the county, this proved to be a very expensive solution. The council identified that by switching from leased lines to a more cost effective wireless delivery they could also take advantage of a variety of other benefits that could be utilised across the local authority, such as offering shared services for its multiple offices and introduce home worker capabilities to its staff. The council also wanted to offer region wide Wi-Fi connectivity, which could be utilised by the local business community. KBR has installed several hundred SkyPilot mesh nodes to cover 2,000km2
of the County of Northumberland.
Starting in the key towns of Alnwick and Berwick, KBR worked to integrate a wide range of council premises, including registrars, schools, libraries, colleges, local businesses, social services, highways depots and fire stations.
The council has been able to save hundreds of thousands of pounds per annum compared with the previous cost of leased lines.

The University of West England (UWE) in Bristol has deployed a VoIP solution with the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise IP-PBX phone system supported by Alcatel-Lucent’s OmniVista network management platform. Users have been equipped with Alcatel-Lucent IP Touch handsets to enable IP call features, while the system supports a number of DECT handset users on a single site. The key driver of the project was a new UWE student village and sports centre, both of which required communications links with other sites and campuses. As it examined ways to reduce the cost of campus wide communications, the university proposed converged voice and data network migration that would not only provide cost savings but would have the potential to improve internal processes throughout the entire organisation. The university also plans to install several departmental contact centres, and to extend the combined Alcatel-Lucent solution to all 4,000 UWE users over the next few years.

Riello UPS has provided a complementary UPS system to data centre designer Sudlows.
Based in East Manchester, Sudlows has designed and built a fully functional data centre through which it can demonstrate its expertise to both current and potential clients.
Sudlows designs and builds data centres for clients across the UK and beyond. In the past, Sudlows would take its clients to a recently completed data centre project to demonstrate its capabilities, but this presented multiple issues and restrictions. The company decided to convert some of its existing office space into a complete demonstration data centre. The 1,000ft2 and is now fully operational.
Riello UPS worked closely with Sudlows to organise the UPS requirements and provided a complementary UPS system to the project. Sudlows chose the 100kVA Multi Plus to illustrate to its clients the typical footprint of a UPS. The system provides eight minutes of protection when at full load. Riello worked closely with the company on the installation of the UPS, including the wiring, commissioning and testing.
