Contracting, plant hire and demolition contractors, J D Pope & Sons Ltd of Burnham on Sea Somerset has replaced a five year old EW160B wheeled excavator with a new EW160C model to its growing fleet of Volvo equipment thanks to first class customer support and product reliability.
Established back in 1960 by founder John Pope, the family business is now in the hands of sons Steve and Gary who have grown and diversified the business into many areas of the industry. This is includes general plant hire, sub con- tracting, specializing in water pipeline and sewage projects for clients such as Wessex Water and more recently, demolition, crushing and material handling. “We’ve been running Volvo equipment for some years now and primarily the after market support we’ve received over this time made our decision to replace the five year old EW160B an easy one,” commented Director Steve Pope.

Joining J D Pope’s mixed fleet of twelve, predominantly branded Volvo excavators comes a wheeled EW160C excavator, equipped with a two piece boom complete with hammer /shear and rotation hydraulic circuits. The two piece boom was specified to facilitate ease of access and total flexibility, specifically for sinking sewer shafts and working in confined areas and trench boxes. In addition J D Pope has fitted the new EW160C with the set of Bandenmarkt wheel and tyre assemblies, previously fitted to their B machine. When mated together the bespoke twin wheel and tyre assemblies mounted on each hub give the appearance of one giant super single tyre negating the need for stone rings whilst maximising the floatation possibilities of the machine. “This is the third wheeled machine we’ve deployed these wheel and tyre assemblies and we’re now on our second set,” said Steve Pope. “We were able to achieve 11000 machine hours on our first set over two machines and they are certainly worth the investment.”
The 17.6 tonne Volvo EW160C is powered by a Volvo six litre low emission Tier III engine developing 142 net hp and a maximum torque of 730Nm at just 1350rpm. An advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. Equipped with its two piece boom, the machine provides an impressive digging depth of 6 meters and a forward reach of 9.7 metres. When it comes to lifting, hose rupture valves are fitted to both boom and dipper cylinders as standard and the maximum lift capacity at 3 metres radius is a generous 6 tonnes.
Getting to work on one of J D Pope’s typical contracts working on a new sewarage pipeline is the company’s latest addition – the Volvo EW160C
