Bespoke Volvo digs deep at London Gateway
A new Volvo EC700C equipped with bespoke deep digging equipment has been purchased by Ovenden Earthmoving Ltd for dredging work at the London Gateway deep sea container port project near Thurrock.

control lever that features an electronically proportional roller. This allows the operator to accurately adjust hydraulic flow as needed. All hydraulic functions are performed in total independence for more control and less delay when handling multiple tasks. An automatic two-speed travel system engages when operating in high speed mode, automatically shifting gear from high to low according to the travel load. Another feature for increased efficiency is the standard auto-idling system that lowers engine speed to idle if a control is not used for five seconds. The engine reverts to the pre-selected speed almost instantly when any control is moved. This system delivers lower fuel consumption, longer engine life and less environmental noise.

The ergonomically-designed cab offers greater leg and foot room, making it one of the most spacious in its category. Optional air conditioning with an included heater is also available, for year-round productivity in hot, humid or cold climates.

In order to carry out the required work on site which involves deep water dredging to profile the revetments on the newly created sand and gravel island and placement of rock armour, Ovenden Earthmoving Ltd commissioned Messrs Kocurek of Ipswich to design and manufacture the equip- ment for the machine. The result is a triple articulated boom providing a maximum reach of 25 metres from slew centre to the bucket edge and a digging depth of 17 metres. At the business end of the equipment is the bucket linkage from the thirty six tonne EC360C and bucket capacity ranging between 1.5m3 and 2.0m3 capacities depending on mate- rial density. An additional counterweight has also been fitted to provide a stable working platform for the machine and the all up weight of the machine is 76 tonnes.
At the heart of the EC700C a 16 litre Tier III V-ACT engine developing 430 nett hp operates in conjunction with an advanced mode control system ensuring the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a con-stant engine speed under varying load conditions. A maximum torque of 2250Nm is achieved at just 1350r/min and this in conjunction with the machine’s advanced hy- draulic system ensures maximum fuel efficiency is achieved through every work cycle. The EC700C has also benefitted from the fitting of the latest Prolec PCX–3D GPS machine guidance package to aid the operator whilst digging under water.
