A brace of Volvo shovels for
Raymond Brown Minerals & Recycling Ltd
Raymond Brown Minerals & Recycling Ltd, part of the Raymond Brown Group, has taken delivery of two Volvo loading shovels for new initiatives being undertaken at its facilities located at Nursling and Romsey in Hampshire.
A new Volvo L60F and L90F join an existing fleet of twelve Volvo loading shovels and excavators continuing a long tradition of operating Volvo equipment and were chosen thanks to the relia- bility of the product, sound residual values and high availability of after market support provided by Volvo Construction Equipment
The L60F & L90F are powered by Tier III 6 litre Volvo engine developing 155 and 174 hp respectively at just 1700rpm. The Tier III/Stage 3 low emission engine delivers high torque at just above tick over, giving the machine excellent rimpull and low fuel consumption as well as significantly low noise levels. Much effort has been expended to increase mid-range torque; giving better operability in the most economic engine speed range. One practical consequence of this increase in horsepower is better pile penetration and fuller buckets.
Engine power is converted into work via a new smooth shifting electric-hydraulic HTE transmission. All the operator has to do is select Forward or Reverse. The Volvo Full Automatic Power Shift (FAPS) then takes over and selects which of the four forward and four reverse gears is required – and the perfect moment to change ratio. The system is independent of both machine and engine speed. New software in the ECU adapts to the operators’ style of driving, optimizing gear changing parameters and saving fuel by always selecting the right gear. For improved operator comfort, oil-filled clutches and a Pulse-Width Modulation Valve in the transmission allow smoother shifting and minimize jolting when changing between gears. The transmission is also significantly quieter than its predecessor, and maximum speed has also been increased. The fact that all major components of the driveline (engine, transmission, axles) are designed and built by Volvo means that they work in harmony, in terms of performance, reliability and also fuel efficiency.
The L90F is in charge of perations at the Nursling site
according to Director Mark Isaac. “We’ve been associated with Volvo equipment for over twenty five years,” he said. “In our opinion the quality of build and overall performance coupled with excellent residual values are reasons why we choose Volvo.”
The smaller L60F was selected to take charge of a new acquisition for Raymond Brown Minerals & Recycling located at Casbrook Park on the outskirts of Romsey. The operation there consists of a medium sized transfer and recycling station with an associated skip hire operation. The site handles local commercial and demolition waste with plans to install a bespoke mechanical sorting plant in the near future. The L60F has been fitted with 20.5x25 SG Revolutions solid wheel and tyre assemblies, a Groenveld auto- matic greasing system, reversible fan, dust buster and a 2m3 rehandling bucket. A fork frame and tines has also been provided which is easily interchangeable thanks to the Volvo quick attach- ment bracket.
At the company’s Lee Lane quarry site at Nursling, the new L90F has been deployed around the site handling incoming material for recycling and loading out crushed recycled aggregate. Its arrival also coincides with a new concrete batching venture undertaken by Raymond Brown Minerals & Recycling that started up in Decem- ber. “We needed the versatility of the L90F to be able to load out both our own fleet of road going tippers and high sided bulkers and to be able to work easily in the product bays as well as feed the new volumetric mixer,” explained Mark Isaac. The new batching plant produces concrete and screed for the local market and specialises in producing retaining wall blocks. To provided maxi- mum flexibility the L90F has been supplied with a standard 2.7m3 rehandling bucket and a heavy duty Ulrich 1.8m3 hi tip bucket designed to handle material up to 1.8 tonnes per cubic metre. And as with the L60F, the machine also benefits from the addition of a reversible fan, dust buster, automatic greasing and a Prolec weighing system.
