A30E and eight A40E models, supported by two EC140C, five EC210C, four EC360C, one EC460C and an EC700C excavator. In addition, two ECR88 and two ECR58 midi excavators complete the package.
All models have been purchased with a full three-year repair and maintenance contract with the exception of the ECR88 and ECR58 excavators, which benefit from Volvo’s three-year warranty. Furthermore, all new machines are supplied with biodegradable oils, reflecting how seriously CHC considers its impact on the environment. “Volvo has shown the same can-do attitude that we like to show our customers,” explains Mr Isherwood. “The level of support, professionalism and backup is exactly what we need from a plant supplier – and it has been available at all levels in Volvo, and at every depot. It is a breath of fresh air to find a manufacturer that is so in-tune with our needs and this is one of many reasons why we have chosen to stay with Volvo for our fleet needs.”
Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system is being supplied on all new equipment, and this represents the next stage of CHC’s fleet management programme to closely monitor fuel use while further improving productivity and efficiency on every machine. Not only does it reduce down time it also produces lower fuel consumption and emissions, and provides health, safety and environmental benefits too. “Escalating fuel cost is becoming a very big issue to everyone and if we can use CareTrack to help cut-down on idle time, while monitoring how kit is being utilised, we can get closer to being 100 per cent efficient in everything we do,” he says.
Established in 1966, CHC is one of the leading plant and equipment providers in the North of England, supplying its own and external major civil engineering projects across the UK with the most tech- nologically advanced and reliable equipment available over the last four decades.
The fleet currently includes 100 items of operated plant, though the plant and equipment portfolio is now on target to grow by 5% each year. Currently, the firm has a fleet of 69 excavators ranging from five-tonne minis up to a 70 tonne heavyweight earthmover, a fleet of low ground pressure dozers equipped with 3D GPS, self- propelled smooth and padfoot rollers and an extensive all-Volvo fleet of 28 articulated dumptrucks.
The arrival of GPS equipment has also played a part in improving the efficiency of the fleet. “In addition to the systems fitted to our dozers to improve cut and fill, plus final trimming, we have a 3D system fitted to the EC460 to make bulk excavations much more accurate,” he says. “GPS is a system that enables a lower labour
requirement, which in turn makes the job faster, more productive and much more cost effective.”
Importantly, the firm prides itself on employing all its own operators, rather than relying on agency operators. “Operator training and investment in our people plays a big part in our business philosophy,” he says. “Many of our management team and workforce have been with the company for more than 10 years and we build upon this reliability and commitment to deliver continuity to our clients,” he says.
The firm remains an established and respected privately owned company, directly employing over 170 people, and has upheld the ethos of providing a service and working together with clients in a spirit of openness and honesty.
CHC prides itself on building long term business relationships and working with clients to find innovative solutions to traditional construction problems. And this philosophy of working closely with customers is a scenario that the firm has seen with Volvo Construction Equipment. “Just like CHC, Volvo has shown itself to be a very pro-active company,” he says.
