the city just spent some money towards a Solid Waste Study. Kessler Engineering is doing that study right now, and they are going to help us put some plans together. We are in a contractual situation.
BMI have talked to a couple of elected county and city officials who are saying that we are headed towards mandatory recycling. What can the city and county do to improve the contracts? GSWaste Management is really working with the city and county to give every home a larger bin. Te small 14-/18-gallon recycling bins had a great start, but they have kind outlived themselves. Personally, I would like to see every home have a minimum of a 32- or 48-gallon recycling container. We have found that if we make it easy for the customer, they will participate more.
BMWhat about commercial recycling? What kind of incentives do you have for businesses? GS Right now the main incentive is the financial reward, where they can save some money. Te other part of this is that appeal to their environmental sense. Recycling simply is the right thing to do, and I know a lot of customers are demanding that they do it.
BMOne of the things that I also see is this move to resource recovery rather than waste management. I think people are looking more at resource recovery, because over the world we see people in poor countries finding those resources and finding a way to recycle them. Here we pay someone to do it for us. Do you think Waste Management here in the Keys is ready to move in that direction? GS As a company we are ready for
it. Our CEO here in the Keys has a very aggressive plan that I believe will be a great success. We are probably looking at about two years out, but if we start now to educate and get people moving in the right direction, then we certainly can be a leader in the whole program.
BMWhat number should someone call if they want to open a recycling account? GSWe have a local salesperson, Margaret Laura, and her number is (305) 797-3312. We are happy meet with any customer, and we will work real hard to find a spot that works best for everyone.
