www.konkbroadcasting.com KONK Life 3 UP F R O N T MR. COMMUNICATOR?
Te views and opinions you read are based on the interviews with community leaders. Even though we are a relatively new publication, our readers have com- municated they have found the stories both intriguing and compelling to read. In essence, the content found in KONK Life forces the reader to think about the issues and personalities portrayed. Recently Julio Avael, host of our program Point-to-Point, interviewed Gary
a
Bowman who was recently employed as the city’s engineer. Mr. Bowman ex- pressed his concern that the City of Key West and its Assistant City Manager David Fernandez mishandled the billing of wastewater projects for government and business entities on Stock Island. After reviewing the interview, I decided to contact Key West’s city manager, Jim Scholl, and invite his team to respond to Mr. Bowman’s claims of gross mismanagement. Over the past several weeks, I have left many messages with Mr. Scholl’s office
and still, today, no response. Over the years, I have heard that Mr. Scholl needs to improve upon his skills as a communicator. My messages to Mr. Scholl clearly stated that I wanted to hear directly from him regarding the allegations stated by Mr. Bowman. Tis was the perfect opportunity for the city’s management team to answer questions regarding the wastewater billing and set the record straight from the City of Key West’s perspective. Today, as I write my column, I feel compelled to publish the interview even though we have only one side of this important story and issue. I find it important for the outcome, may and if Mr. Bowman is correct, cost the city and its taxpayers precious tax dollars. Te city manager’s recent job performance evaluation from the mayor and fel-
low commissioners stated communication is an area that needs improvement. My experience here speaks volumes to Mr. Scholl’s inability to respond and an- swer our questions. Te KONK staff and I work hard to deliver quality on-air programming and now KONK Life. I feel Mr. Scholl needs to stand up and speak clearly about these issues. I, for one, am ready to hear both sides of the story. Hopefully you will be able to read the whole story right here in KONK Life soon. Our audience and readers consider KONK a reliable news organiza- tion, and I believe we have earned their trust. My question today is, what is worst? Te Mr. Scholl disregard to our news organization or to a private resi- dent? What happens when you have a question for the city manager— will he respond the same to you?
s the publisher of KONK Life, I take personal responsibility for the stories found on our pages. I select the stories from the studios of our sister company, KONK Radio. Te story’s importance is based on its relevance to life in and around the Florida Keys. Te stories you read here ultimately matter to your life, family and business.
