Bridget McDonald | BM: We really want to see more businesses recycling because everybody knows that is where all the trash is. By recycling we are conserving resources, and it’s very doable for folks to recycle here. Greg Sullivan | GS: As a business you can begin recycling with a small bin for as little as $3 a month, and you can go once a week with a 96-gallon container for only $39. When people want to start recycling, I tell them not to be overwhelmed and just start with one product. If your biggest volume is cardboard, start there. Gradually we can start changing the habits and make it happen.

BMIf you put your recycling in another bin, you might cut down on your solid waste and be able to find a balance between the two. GSTere absolutely can be a balance in the fees.
BMWaste Management no longer requires businesses to have a dump- ster for their recycling, correct? GS Right. Businesses now have a couple of options. Let’s say they have a large amount of cardboard, they can either put that cardboard in a 96-gallon loader or do what is called a “loose service” and tie the cardboard up in twine or flatten the boxes and pack it all into one big box. We require that to be less than 50 pounds.
BMCan you share a recycling account with your neighbor? GS As long as it is an adjacent neighbor.
BMWhat is the charge for businesses to have large applications such as a refrigerator, stove or oven hauled away? GS It is around a $15 charge for businesses, and there is no charge for residents.
BMHow much recycling does your plant in Broward process per day? GS Our plant in Broward serves part of Dade and Broward counties and all of Monroe County, and it processes around 1,000 tons of recycling per day. Years ago, the guys used to sort through the recycle bin and leave behind anything that was not supposed to be in there, but we now do single-stream recycling which means we take everything. If someone inadvertently puts a wrong item in there, it will get pulled at our processing plant. We are running about 10 percent
4 KONK Life residue out of the plant right now.
BMSo this does not happen at the transfer stations? GS No. Tat all happens at the Material Recovery Facility [MRF]. Te transfer stations are simply a conduit for us to get it from a smaller truck to a larger truck and then ship it up the road.
BMIs it possible that you would put recycling into a regular solid waste truck to get it to the MRF? GS Yes. Te trucks we use are the same vehicles. I received permission to paint some of them white, but it still is the same truck.
BMHere in the Keys what does Waste Management do to encourage businesses to recycle? GSWe work closely with the city to get PSAs [Public Service Annoucements] and flyers out and
