S P O T L GI H T PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT Facing the future
TRANSFORMING THE PARKING SECTOR FROM AN ACTIVITY TO A PROFESSION HAS BEEN AT THE HEART OF THE UK PARKING SECTOR SKILLS STRATEGY. ROCKY DATOO SAYS: ‘JOB DONE! WHAT NEXT?’
It was in 2006 when, through the UK Parking Workforce Survey, the British Parking Association (BPA) set out to defi ne the boundaries of the parking sector. T is research provided the BPA with a strong base on which to build the UK Parking Sector Skills Strategy; the fi rst public- facing step towards transforming parking from an activity into a profession. Now, fi ve years later, we have:
● Delivered the UK Parking Sector Skills
Strategy; ● Elected an active Skills and IPP Board; ● Built a strong relationship with Asset Skills, the sector skills council for the built
environment; ● Produced comprehensive functional and occupational maps with the requisite
national occupational standards; ● Developed a qualifi cation framework that meets the needs identifi ed by those
working in the sector; and ● Established the Institute of Parking Professionals (IPP) to represent and assist individuals working in our sector. More details will be circulated in a Skills
for Success brochure with the April issue of Parking News, and we will celebrate these successes at Parkex (see separate box), but have we really transformed parking from an activity to a profession?
18 MARCH 2011
Taking stock So what is working well? What needs to change? What are we missing? What next? To answer these questions, we are again turning to the sector. We want to
understand: ● Has the shape, size and feel of the sector
changed in the past fi ve years? ● What has been the impact of legislation,
the economy and technological advances? ● Have public and media perception of the
parking sector changed? ● Are there more people working in
parking, and are they better qualifi ed? ● Have career aspirations changed? ● What does the sector need now?
Essentially, we want to update our profi le
of the UK parking workforce and evaluate the impact of the UK Parking Sector Skills Strategy 2007.
We have appointed Pye Tait Consulting,
specialists in business services, to undertake this work for us between March and June 2011. Reliable input is essential – so, if Pye Tait Consulting approaches you, do take a few minutes to speak with them. Alternatively, to be sure your organisation participates in this research, contact Adrian Smith (
a.smith@
pyetait.com). T ere will also be opportunities to complete a survey at the Parkex exhibition and online through the new BPA and IPP websites. We also invite representatives of the
Learning and Development Network for their views, on both what has been achieved in the last four years and what needs to happpen in the next fi ve.
Have your say To enable the Learning and Development Network to become involved, we are preparing to host an event, provisionally scheduled for early May, in London. Pye Tait Consulting will facilitate round-table focus groups and ensure that the key fi ndings from detailed discussions are taken forward to the Skills and IPP Board. Expressions of interest in attending
this event are now being sought from representatives of the Learning and Development Network. Places are limited so, if you would like to attend or request further information, contact Adrian Smith (
a.smith@
pyetait.com) or Dave Smith (
dave.s@britishparking.co.uk). Details will be released to Learning and Development Network organisations in due course. Making the parking sector a recognised
profession is core to the BPA’s strategy. We have demonstrated the value of building our strategy on robust data and now begin the cycle again. Please ensure that your views are heard and your needs are planned for. Have your say once more!
