Senior Service…
Christopher Ward London has been named as official watch licensee to the Royal Navy – the oldest of Britain’s armed forces and known as the Senior Service.
In a deal that mirrors its relationship with the RAF, Christopher Ward will make specially designed Royal Navy branded watches for individual fleet and unit personnel, and commemorative pieces. Watch out for launches later this year.
Beckett’s voted forum Watch of the Year
Christopher Ward Forum members have voted the C90 Beckett’s as the most significant new watch from Christopher Ward in 2010.
Launched in September, the C90 Beckett’s quickly became a favourite with forum members. It features a 45-hour power reserve, a 24 jewel ETA Valgranges A07.161 automatic movement, a multi-layered two- piece precision dial and a see- through back plate.
…as800NAS watch takes flight
The first Royal Navy commission is for a watch for the 800 Naval Air Squadron to commemorate the recently
decommissioned unit.
Part of the Fleet Air Arm, the carrier- based squadron was formed in 1933 and originally flew Nimrods. The 800 saw action in World War II, in Korea and in the Falklands and flew from most of the iconic carriers – HMS Ark Royal, HMS Hermes and HMS Illustrious among them.
Most recently the squadron used Harrier jets, also victim of the recent defence review. Christopher Ward is is in talks with two other Harrier squadrons – RAF 4 Squadron and RAF 1 Squadron.
The modern 43mm case watch has gleaned a raft of positive responses. On the Forum, RVW says: “It oozes class and style. It has visual impact that is really not matched by the others. Simple style but great design,” while Peter Leach was “stunned at the superb quality and value of this watch, and the unique design sets it apart from the chasing pack.”

With five years under its belt, the Christopher Ward forum has topped 2,500 members.
The forum, which was launched by watch aficionado Hans van Hoogstraten in 2005, has over 70,000 posts covering 5500 topics.
STOP PRESS Chris and the team are
working on developing a new white dial version of the C90 Beckett’s, likely to be launched in Summer 2011.
Van Hoogstraten started the
independent forum originally because he could not believe the Christopher Ward proposition and wanted to discuss it freely with other watch enthusiasts. While the forum remains
independent, he was happy for Chris Ward himself to get involved – and the rest, as they say, is history. See the watches van Hoogstraten counts among his favourites in The Collectors on page 34.
