The Rallye Automobile


Monte-Carlo was launched by Monaco’s Prince Albert 1, aimed at testing automobile innovations being developed in the infancy of the car industry. Starting points were Geneva, Paris, Vienna, Brussels and Berlin. The winner was Parisian Henri Rougier, driving a 25- horse power Turcat-Mery. Starting from Paris, Rougier took the crown with the fastest average of 36.2 km an hour.


the premier event in Europe – the harsh winters across other parts of Europe helped to build Monte-Carlo’s reputation.

swept the board in 1934. (Shown right)Thomas Wisden and Donald Healy came first in the light class and third overall in their Triumph Gloria Special. Pictured on their return from the rally the pair are greeted by Gloria from Selfridges, after whom the car was named.
