ern Schuppen is not necessarily a name that is particularly well known, but in the world of motor sport he is a name to


be reckoned with.


A veteran of Formula 1 and a World Sportscar Championships winner, the 1970s and 1980s saw Schuppen drive F1, F2, Formula 5000, Indianapolis 500 and Touring cars.


He drove for Porsche in the World Sportscar Championship races including a clutch of Le Mans 24 hours challenges, scooping 2nd position twice, a 3rd, a 5th, a 6th, and – the highlight of his racing career – taking pole position in 1983. At the time he won Le Mans, in a team with former F1 star Jochen Mass, he was driving a prototype - page 32➔
