Mike Weatherley MP will be taking questions from riders from 7.30 pm, with the whole event finishing at 9.30 pm. Chandlers BMW on Victoria Road, Portslade is the forward thinking motorcycle dealership hosting the event. If you live in Brighton and Hove, go along and meet an MP who really is listening.

Nik Sanders

During the Carole Nash Motorcycle Live Show at the NEC, MAG was delighted to have Nick Sanders rejoin as a full member. The multiple World Record holder and global traveller extraordinaire, is conscious of how important belonging to a national riders rights group is, even though he spends much of his time out of the country. Nick says, “It’s so important that motorcycling has a voice and I really admire what MAG does.”

Nick is pictured signing his MAG application form with MAG’s Paddy Tyson.

Threat to green laning

From the Isle of Man to the Home Counties, green laning is under threat from unsympathetic forces

One in five thefts is a bike

Motorcycles account for more than one in five stolen vehicles despite making up only about 1% of vehicles on the road, according to new figures. While the number of motorcycles stolen every year has fallen, the figure for cars has dropped much faster.

The result is that bikes have gone from representing 16.8% of all vehicles stolen in 2006 to 21.69% last year.

The figures, derived from the Police National Computer by Retainagroup Ltd, show the number of bikes stolen has dropped from 26,608 in 2006 to 21,928 last year.

The future for Green Laning in the Isle of Man has been called into question by a local environmentalist. Richard Crowhurst, a director of the Isle of Man Woodland Trusts, would like to see a ban on trail riding in the Isle of Man. Crowhurst is particularly concerned about damage being done to the Millenium Way. “This damage will last years. I wish the people responsible had to come and repair it,” he said. “Though I personally would like to see it, I accept a complete ban is not practical but I think the bikes should be excluded from ancient lanes like this and allowed to use some of the others provided they stick to the marked route and don’t carve through the heathland.”

Local motorcycle groups are objecting to Crowhurst’s claims. Steve Collins, who is on the committee of the Southern Motorcycle Club, which organises trials and enduro events, said he was against a bike ban from any of the Green Lanes or Ways.

“As a Manxman, I have ridden these tracks for 30 years and these people have to remember to live and let live,” he said.

Melanie Falconer

Mortons Media Group Editor Steve Rose, who also became a MAG memeber at the NEC has been joined by Motorcycle Monthly Editor Melanie Falconer. Former Bike magazine Editor Steve Rose now heads up Mortons growing catalogue of more than a dozen motorcycle titles that includes, Motorcycle Sport and Leisure, Motorcycle Mechanics, many classic titles and the Country’s biggest free monthly publication Motorcycle Monthly.

Melanie, who has a wealth of on and off-road experience, is pictured riding off-road in the Duck Canyon, Peru.

8 The ROAD HAIRY BIKERS MUMS KNOW

The Hairy Bikers are back on TV with a new series called ‘Mums Know Best.’ BBC 2 are broadcasting the new series that features two of the nation’s best known MAG members exploring mum’s favourite recipes.

“This is a biking nation that has produced enduro world champions and top trials riders like Steve Colley. People need somewhere to ride.” An Isle of Man ‘Newspapers on-line’ poll in November 2006 attracted 14,501 responses with 8,366 (57 per cent) opposed to restricting motorcycles on green lanes. Meanwhile in Surrey The Trail Riders Fellowship are seeking help in opposing Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) on two Surrey trails. Local opposition is blamed for the threatened closures which opponents of the green laners say are in poor condition. Objections should be made to Hannah Gutteridge of Surrey Council by the end of February.
