Ealing Council is to scrap its motorcycles in bus lanes experiment which began in 2009.
Ealing council say there have been significantly more motorcyclist casualties since the experiment has been running. Many of these have been caused by cars turning across bus lanes into side junctions. The council considered data from the
London wide experiment on Transport for London roads and data from motorcycle crashes on Ealing roads. The increased casualties in Ealing were similar to those on the TfL roads, they claim. Meanwhile an online survey conducted by
Peugeot has revealed 95 per cent of voters are firmly behind allowing motorcycles and scooters to use bus lanes in towns and cities across the UK. Peugeot asked in their online poll: ‘Should bus lanes be opened up to scooters
and motorcycles country wide?’ Out of 1000 respondents, 95% voted to allow two-wheelers into UK bus lanes.
ROAD comment: MAG has written to Ealing Council requesting the data on which they have based their decision. This is clearly a case where local effort is
crucial and MAG has contacted London members for whom we have email addresses, to contact the borough with their views. Pressure from cycle bodies hostile to the
use of bus lanes by motorcyclists is thought to have been a factor in the council’s decision and the best thing we can do is provide a counter opinion to balance theirs. What we suspect at present is that the numbers of accidents involving motorcycles in Ealing’s bus lanes is very small and the decision to ban motorcycles from the lanes has been taken more on the basis of prejudice and as a result of persistent lobbying than on any significant statistical base. The other issue that this flags up is the
crucial importance to MAG’s lobbying strength of having email addresses for members. MAG is a lobbying organisation but the
tiny full time staff cannot fight a hundred battles simultaneously. MAG’s strength lies with its members and while we endeavour to keep you all informed and hopefully armed with arguments, we need members to get involved locally even if it is as simple as sending an email to a council about parking, potholes or bus lane access. London bikers are being encouraged to wear green dots on their helmets and carry cards loaded with medical information
An initiative to help motorcyclists involved in accidents get the aid they need as quickly as possible was launched at London’s ACE Cafe. CRASH cards are now available to bikers across the capital so they can keep personal and medical information in their helmet. Bikers then wear a green dot on the helmet so that if they are involved in an accident, ambulance staff treating them can quickly identify any existing medical conditions, as well as other important personal information. With support from London Ambulance Service and the Ambulance Motorcycle Club the card – the first of its kind anywhere when first introduced in the UK in 2009 is being sponsored in London by Open House Products.
