Creation of new 'Warwickshire' region

The current 'West Midlands' region is one of the largest in MAG and has proven too large for any one person to manage effectively in recent years. Since September 2009, I have established three new groups in the area, covered by the historic boundary of Warwickshire. These groups have recruited more than 50 members and contributed more than £4000 to MAG. They have made good links to local councils, MPs and organisations such as the fire service casualty reduction team and the profile of MAG in Warwickshire is now at the highest level it has been in over a decade and already operating under the unofficial banner of Warwickshire MAG.

The idea has already been agreed with the

West Mids Regional Rep who has agreed to release the County.

My proposal is that a new region of

Warwickshire is created, combining the areas covered by Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. This would create the conditions for two viable MAG regions; ‘West Midlands’ and ‘Warwickshire’ and give a smaller region which can be worked much more effectively to everyone’s benefit.

Manifestos Chairman of MAG UK

Paul Turner, member no: 116205

I feel that over the last two years as MAG’s Chairman I have been learning the job. We have gone through some major changes in MAG, not only in administrative matters with office relocation and staff changes but in the way we work.

Employing Paddy Tyson has turned out to be one of the best decisions in MAG’s history. His enthusiasm has motivated us all.

I have the time to give to the role of chair and am always available and willing to talk to any of you on any matter.

I have supported many events over the last two years and will try to get to more as time passes,

I’ve been riding since I was 18, when I started with a Yamaha SR125. When I passed my test I splashed out on a Honda CM250T, I bought it back a few years after I sold it and it’s sat in my garage since, half chopped, one day... I’ve gone through a whole series of bikes since; the highlights have to be a V-Max and a Buell Lightning. Now I’m on a Honda Pan European, a wonderful workhorse all-year round as I don’t drive, but would love to get back to two bikes so I can have a fun machine as well. I’ve been a member of MAG since around 2002, I think? I’ve often debated in my mind about trying to re-kindle Bicester and District MAG as it had lapsed shortly after I moved to Bicester. I used to get over to West Oxon a bit, but not for many years now to be honest. I joined the MAG-affiliated Beerhounds MCC when I first moved to Bicester and was with them for about ten years until I moved over to the Grandfathers, as I wanted the excuse to travel a little more.

I’m a qualified Accounting Technician, and am slowly working my way through the Association of Chartered Certified Accounts curriculum as well. I currently sit on the Oxfordshire branch of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) where I help support the local members’ Compulsory Professional Development requirements.

As well as all of those I’m also a member of the NABD and think it’s a great cause. I’ve not been involved with MAG nationally in any real way before, so I’ll be coming into this from scratch. It’s been indicated to me that there is a desire to develop a culture of forward

but I can only do so much each year. I would like to thank my wife Louise- (Mrs Chairman) for putting up with me being on the computer so much of the time and taking so much time away from home on MAG business. Also Nich and Louisa at MAG Central for my continual calls to see what is happening and how we are doing.

Thanks also to you the Members, Group Reps and Regional reps who have shown support for MAG UK.

I feel I can continue to do my bit for what we all want, to ride what we want, when we want and where we want.

National Finance Officer and Director Patrick van Aalst, member no: 105550

planning, financial goal setting, and setting budgets according to planned activity rather than historical patterns etc...’ which I would be happy to support and set in place.

My accounting career has taken me from sales ledger clerk through credit controller, purchase ledger clerk, accounts assistant, and finance manager, to my current role of finance analyst. The highlights of my CV include reducing the business’ close cycle from 10 working days to three, migrating supplier payments from cheque to BACS, implementing a new payroll system, being involved in the implementation of a new ERP system across 6 EU countries, implementing and maintaining a sales bonus scheme, and enhancing the sales data provided for the budgetary process.

Throughout these roles I feel I have demonstrated a tendency to use a combination of technology and best practice to ensure the finance function is operating efficiently and accurately. I strongly feel that this is important in order to ensure that the finance function meets both its statutory obligations and supplies the entity with good reliable data to enable it to make the best decisions.

I have basic experience of Sage Instant Accounting and Sage Line 50, 100 & 200, but not a huge number of hours on any of them. I have a good amount of experience with the Microsoft Office suite, but especially Excel. At work I’m the one anyone turns to when they need to find a solution in Excel, though I still find myself learning new things about it.

I look forward to working with you all, and to being able to combine a career I enjoy with a cause I support.

Having fulfilled the role of National Finance

Officer provisionally for a few months has led to a broadening of my perception of the job. I would like to work with the regions and groups to develop a better and more unified treasury function. My ultimate goal would be for local MAG treasurers to think and work under one banner rather than as many separate groups. This is in no way a criticism of current practice, but a vision of where I think we need to aim in the future as MAG grows and develops. I’m aware that Bill is working on collating regional and group information as we speak and I would like to work with him and Andy to build a treasurer’s database, mailing list etc, to allow us all to work together much more closely.
