FEATURE FAR EAST CITIES & BEACHES
Up Close and Personal by Paul Oswell
“In 1999 I first headed to Thailand, with naïve thoughts in my head about how roughing it for two weeks in South East Asia would turn me into a well-rounded man of the world. Ten years later, I decided to revisit the country, only this time dispensing with the vow of poverty, seeking out the things that appealed to me in my, well, let’s just call it ‘thirties’. The itinerary was tailored for the young professional returning to the destination they once saw from the inside of hostels and wooden beach huts. The trick was not to go too far in the other direction, and so a small boutique hotel in colourful Sukhumvit – the Amari Boulevard – was perfect. Civilised, but close enough to real life to get my nose up into the city’s smells and not feel removed. For the second leg I stayed in another Amari – the Vogue – in Krabi, which felt less of a sell-out than Phuket. A kayaking tour was arranged to keep up the ‘getting back to nature’ vibe. A junk across to Khao Lak and a couple of nights in the unabashed luxury of the Sarojin was just the way to finish."
