form resolutions that are all too soon forgotten. Before you know it, many of us are back into the same old routine and making the same mistakes. We intended to get more done, make more calls, talk to more people. We were optimistic, fired up and could see ourselves really making a difference. But alas all too often it doesn’t really happen. And why do we wait for a particular event in order to start over? Whether it’s a new year or when we get back from our holidays, or at the beginning of the next month, this really doesn’t make sense.

We’re blessed with 365 new days every year. Each day starts as a new beginning. We can start over, we can start anew, and more importantly we can do it any day we like. The ‘every day is a new day’ philosophy is a great one to live by. It means we can let go of past mistakes. If we failed to get the result we wanted yesterday, we have a new opportunity today. Positive people seem to achieve more, negative people tend to quit too early.

probably about my age, shall we say not in the full bloom of youth, talking about a sizeable business challenge. He was upset, hence the loud voice. His main point was, and I paraphrase ‘I’m not 18 any more, I don’t want to start over, I don’t have the same energy as a young person’.


You could argue that although the chap wasn’t as young as he once was he did have something going for him. What he had was plenty of life’s experiences. He wasn’t naïve. He’d been there before and knew what to expect. If ever you find yourself having to begin again, perhaps the strategy of drawing on your own experiences will serve you well. As you go through your career you’ll have plenty of time to reflect on the things you should have done. Well, you could choose to do some of those tomorrow, or this afternoon, or in some cases you could start right now.

when the sun is shining’, is an absolute cracker. All too often a salesperson has a half decent month, pulls in a couple of good deals and then rests on their laurels. The best thing to do when business is coming your way is to get out there and uncover even more. Don’t take your foot off the gas, rather change up a gear.


Another thought that often rings true is ‘When the student is ready the teacher appears’. If you find yourself struggling with a particular aspect of the job, can’t quite get the right angle to open more doors or can’t get the prospect to commit, then no worries. If you realise and accept that you have a challenge then you’re already half way there. And perhaps a slightly more experienced person with some great ways to help you get the result you want is not too far off.


Lots of us know you only really fail when you give up. You aren’t failing when you’re trying again. George Allen noted, ‘People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don’t know when to quit. Most people succeed because they are determined to’. So you see, success is rarely far off. Search a little more and try a little harder. If you don’t quite succeed today, start again tomorrow. n
